    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les interventions menées sous endoscopie sur les sinus paranasaux nécessitent une connaissance détaillée de l'anatomie individuelle, en particulier celle des rapports de ces sinus avec les structures anatomiques environnantes, fragiles et vulnérables. Les images digitalisées issues de tomographies computérisées (TDM) et d'imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) sont utilisées pour la reconstruction en trois dimensions (3D) du champ opératoire, fournissant la base de la plupart des systèmes de navigation 3D, pour guider le chirurgien au voisinage immédiate de structures fragiles et minimiser ainsi le risque de lésions iatrogèniques. Nous rapportons l'application du système de navigation assisté par ordinateur ISG Viewing Wand dans la chirurgie endoscopique endonasale, en rapport avec l'anatomie des sinus paranasaux.
    Notes: Summary Minimal invasive endoscopic operations in the paranasal sinuses rely on the detailed knowledge of the individual anatomy, in particular the relationship of the sinus system to neigh-bouring delicate and vulnerable anatomical structures. Digital CT and MR images are used for 3D reconstruction of the operating field, providing the basis for most 3D navigation systems, guiding the surgeon in close vicinity to delicate structures and so minimising the risk of iatrogenic trauma. We report the application of the ISG Viewing Wand, a computer-assisted navigation system, in endoscopic endonasal surgery related to the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses.

    Notes: Vibrational relaxation of N+2(X 2Σ+g, ν=1) in collisions with He is studied by means of both the quasiclassical trajectory moment method and a semiclasssical analytical approach. To carry out trajectory calculations the potential-energy surface of N+2–He is modeled using ab initio data. Rate constants k10(T) calculated by the moment method reproduce the plateau-like behavior in the Landau–Teller plot of the experimental values at the near thermal energy limit. Simpler analytical models allowing for the long-range interaction are also used to estimate k10(T). The presented theoretical results are in good qualitative agreement with experimental data.

    Notes: We have studied the charge-transfer reaction of ground-state N+(3PJ) ions with N2(1Σ+g) from thermal to 40 and 100 eV in the center-of-mass frame with the Utah guided-ion beam mass spectrometer and the Trento crossed-beam guided-ion beam experiment. Although the formation of N+2(X 2Σ+g) is endothermic by only 1.043 eV, the charge-transfer process to yield N+2 is not observed until approximately 2.8 eV. Studies using isotopically labeled 15N+ ions demonstrate that electron- and atom-transfer channels start at the same energy and have similar energy dependencies until about 6 eV, a result that implies a symmetric but acyclic N+3 intermediate. We discuss the mechanism for this reaction by means of state correlation diagrams that demonstrate that the charge-transfer reaction must involve strong nonadiabatic effects.

    Notes: The energy dependence of the reaction of CH+2 with HCl has been investigated using a selected ion flow drift tube (SIFDT) in the center-of-mass kinetic energy (KEc.m.) range from 0.04–2 eV. The reaction rate coefficient is fast at near thermal energies (k∼1.5×10−9 cm3 s−1) but decreases dramatically with increasing KEc.m. to k〈1×10−10 cm3 s−1 at 2 eV, which is quite uncommon for a thermally fast ion–molecule reaction.

    Notes: The very fast charge transfer of N+2 with SF6 and the H abstraction from H2 by N+2 are found not to be detectably diminished by vibrational excitation of N+2 to ν=1. No vibrational quenching was observed in either case, establishing an upper limit of ≈5% to the vibrational quenching efficiency. No reaction of N+2 with H or D was observed, k〈10−11 cm3 s−1, and no vibrational quenching was observed in either case, kq〈3×10−11 cm3 s−1.

    Notes: Rate coefficients for the dissociation of Kr+2, N2Ar+, (CO)+2, CH+5, and C2H+5 ions in collisions with He have been obtained in a drift tube experiment as dependent on the mean relative kinetic energy in the center-of-mass frame Ec in the range from 0.1 to 0.5 eV. The Arrhenius activation energies obtained for dissociation are 1.15, 0.91, 1.1–1.3, 1.1–1.4, and 1.3–1.7 eV for Kr+2, N2Ar+, (CO)+2, CH+5, and C2H+5 ions, respectively. For the thermal energy region, the rate coefficients for the same processes have been calculated from three-body association rate coefficients reported in the literature, equilibrium constants, and known thermodynamic quantities. The values of the dissociation rate coefficients obtained cover a range of 15 to 50 orders of magnitude. The present data indicate that the internal temperature Ti of the drifting ions is in close equilibrium with Ec, i.e., Ec=3/2.kBTi.

    Notes: The rate coefficients for the reactions of the ions H+, H2+, H3+, N+, N2+, Ar+, C+, CH+, CH2+, CH3+, CH4+, and CH5+ with HCl have been measured as a function of reactant ion/reactant neutral average center-of-mass kinetic energy (KEc.m.). The measurements were performed using a selected ion flow drift tube operated at 300 K with helium buffer gas. Most of these reactions have rate coefficients close to their collisional values at ambient temperature and all of them exhibit a pronounced KEc.m. dependence. A simple model is proposed, in which the measured dependence of the rate coefficients on KEc.m. is expressed in terms of the kinetic-energy dependence of the rate unimolecular decomposition of the intermediate complex formed in the ion-neutral collision.
