Notes: Abstract The links among family characteristics, pre-marital experiences organized outside the family, and participation in choice of spouse are now well established for historical transformations in a range of social settings. Less examined are the consequences of these changes for subsequent inter-familial relationships in societies where marriage organizes kin alliances and interfamilial labor obligations. Using survey and ethnographic data gathered in Nepal, this paper examines the implications of change in work, living experiences, and the marriage process for subsequent inter-familial relationships exemplified by crosscousin marriage and the provision of brideservice. Hypotheses are developed which consider the impact of community context on these behaviors; these are tested in logistic regression analyses for the first marriages of all 430 ever-married women in the community. Cross-cousin marriage and brideservice are shown to be related to prior familial characteristics, life-course experience, and elements of the marriage process in ways that are significantly conditioned by community history and proximity to urban centers.

Notes: Calixareneglycine ester acetamides 4a-c have been synthesized from calixareneacetyl chlorides 5a-c and glycine ethyl ester (6). Their ion-binding properties have been investigated by liquid-liquid extraction with radiotracer techniques. The experiments reveal a moderate affinity towards silver(I) ions, which increases with calixarene ring size.

Notes: Calixarene carbamates were obtained in good yield from the clean reaction of n-butyl isocyanate with para-tert-butyl-calix[4]-, -[6]-, and -[8]arenes. Whereas the two larger calixarenes remain mobile in solution upon derivatisation, para-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene is locked in the cone conformation. A selective triple acylation was observed with Li2CO3 as base, whereas K2CO3 leads to complete functionalisation of all hydroxy groups. The relative stability of all possible conformers of calix[4]arene tetracarbamate (1) was examined by force field calculations, showing the cone conformer as the most stable one. The structures of compounds 1 and 3 were investigated by X-ray structure analysis, confirming the cone conformation for both compounds.
