Notes: Abstract A nonlinear conservative Lyapunov system is analyzed, and satisfactory agreement between the nalytical solution and the results of numerical analysis is obtained. Oscillation spectra of a nonautonomous onlinear system that is close to the Lyapunov one are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A nonlinear conservative Lyapunov system is treated analytically and numerically. The results of the two approaches show satisfactory agreement. The spectra of forced oscillations in a related nonlinear system are examined.

Notes: Abstract The principal terms of the asymptotic expansion of a resonance (quasi-eigenfrequency) are derived for waveguides coupled via a small hole. The Dirichlet condition is assumed to be fulfilled at the boundary. The results are compared to estimates obtained earlier. The construction is performed by matching asymptotic expansions for solutions of boundary-value problems.

Notes: Abstract A method based upon approximation of the sequence of counts by a first-order trigonometric polynomial with variable frequencies of the harmonic functions is proposed for evaluation of the parameters of components in oscillation spectra. This approach was used to estimate the parameters of bifurcational period doubling and the Feigenbaum constant in solutions of the Rossler set of equations. A possibility of decreasing the level of side components of an intense oscillation by using a difference spectrum in estimating a weak spectral component is considered.

Notes: A system of two waveguides coupled laterally through a small window is considered. The asymptotics (in the width of window) of resonance (quasibound state) close to the second threshold is obtained. The cases of two different and two identical waveguides are considered. The technique is matching the asymptotic expansions of the solutions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a novel electro-optic double-modulation (DM) sampling technique for ultrafast transient spectroscopy, which is characterized by a superior signal-to-noise ratio compared to that of a regular single-modulation technique. DM is achieved by a combined effect of a radio-frequency modulation, which eliminates most of the low-frequency noise, and an audio-frequency modulation, which makes use of a high-performance, low-frequency lock-in amplifier. The DM sensitivity is comparable to that of the more sophisticated schemes involving electrical mixing and the A–B noise reduction method. We show that the DM technique offers superior performance in two-beam transient pump-and-probe correlation measurements compared to the regular single frequency modulation technique and is an ideal scheme for three-beam picosecond correlation measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoluminescence in thin films of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivatives is studied using a two-beam excitation technique. It is demonstrated that excited state absorption leads to the reversible quenching of steady-state luminescence. Measurements of ultrafast exciton dynamics show that this quenching is due to exciton depletion by photogenerated metastable quenching centers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photopumped, pulsed, narrow line laser emission is demonstrated using cylindrical microcavities formed by π-conjugated polymer thin films wrapped around thin glass optical fibers and metal wires with various diameters D. A variety of cavity-dependent resonant laser mode structures were observed, which for D〈10 μm contain a single resonant spectral line of less than 1 Å in width. The microring lasers are also characterized by a well-defined, very low threshold excitation intensity, at which beam directionality and polarization degree dramatically increase. These findings open up the fields of lasers and fiber optics to organic materials. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Substantially improved, photopumped polymer lasers are demonstrated using microrings and microdisks of various diameters D ranging from 5 to 200 μm. Various cavity-dependent laser modes were observed, which for D〈10 μm were dominated by a single longitudinal mode with linewidth of less than 1 Å. These microlasers were also characterized by Q of order 5000, low threshold excitation energy of order 100 pJ/pulse for pulse duration ranging from 100 ps to sub-μs, and an abrupt increase in the emission directionality and polarization degree. Light emitting diodes with cylindrical geometry, fully compatible with these microlasers are also demonstrated. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
