Description / Table of Contents: Contents In the derivation of the magnetic vector potential wave equation, usually, an irrotational component A irr is introduced, the semantics of which are left to the discretion of the reader. This paper explains the physical meaning of this irrotational component and the differences between the Coulomb gauge and the Lorentz gauge.

Notes: Intense bursts of nonthermal electron cyclotron emission (ECE) have been observed in H-mode (high confinement) discharges in the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon and L. G. Davis, Fusion Technol. 8, 441 (1985)], measured with heterodyne radiometers and a broadband far infrared (FIR) detector. These bursts are triggered by edge-localized modes (ELMs) and consist of single or several spikes, most lasting 5–150 μs. Radiation temperatures reach up to several MeV. Observed spectral bandwidths are typically less than 4 GHz. Bandwidths as low as 500 MHz, which is the limit of the instrumental filter spacing, have been found. Statistical analysis shows a steady decrease of the number of spikes with rising spike energy. Burst frequencies seem to depend linearly on the magnetic field. It is speculated that the bursts are coherent second harmonic ECE. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A polarimeter based on the Cotton–Mouton effect has been developed and installed at the W7-AS stellarator. It is operated in the submillimeter wave region at frequencies of 500–650 GHz. The polarimeter demonstrated its capability to perform absolute, robust measurements of the line integrated electron density. The change of the state of polarization is calculated with high accuracy using Segre's formalism. By varying the frequency and the B field, it could be shown that the Faraday effect has negligible influence on the measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new radiometer has been built up for the W7-AS stellarator which consists of a frontend with an extreme broadband mixer, two intermediate frequency (IF) parts with 16 channels each and a novel additional 16 filter section with variable IF. The system was designed with the future W7-X in mind. All settings can therefore be remotely changed. This "W7-X" system is integrated into the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) systems at W7-AS. EC radiation is collected using elliptical mirrors in Gaussian optics. W7-AS results will be shown. The "zoom" device is installed at DIII-D at the moment; first results are also shown. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Activities of the lactate dehydrogenase within the periportal zone and within the perivenous zone in the first layer of hepatocytes adjacent to terminal hepatic venules and the remainder of the perivenous parenchyma of the liver acinus were measured using a Lowry technique during a full 24-h cycle (08.00-08.00) in untreated adult male Wistar rats kept under 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness, scotophase 18.25-06.25. In all three regions studied a broad first maximum was recorded between 10.00 and 22.00 with the peak value at 16.00 and a high and narrow peak at 24.00. Zonal and intrazonal heterogeneity of the lactate dehydrogenase were retained during the full day and night cycle. The regions displayed individual dynamic changes in enzyme activity.

Notes: Abstract. In a joint experiment the TAPS and CERES collaborations have studied the production of the neutral mesons $\pi^\circ,\eta$ and $\omega$ in 450 GeV p-Be and p-Au collisions at the CERN SPS. The mesons were identified by their $\pi^\circ\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ , $\eta\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ , and $\omega\rightarrow\pi^\circ\gamma$ decay modes. The cross sections were measured down to very low $p_T$ ( $\geq$ 20 MeV/c) near mid-rapidity ( $3.0 〈 y 〈 4.0$ ). The $\eta$ and $\omega$ cross sections are smaller than expected from extrapolations of earlier data to low $p_T$ . Integrated over all $p_T$ , the ratios $\eta/\pi^\circ$ and $\omega$ / $\pi^\circ$ are lower by about 25% compared to previously published values. The reduction may be attributed to the large number of low $p_T$ pions from decays of heavier mesons. In addition, we have studied the dependence of neutral meson production on the mass of the nuclear target and find it in good agreement with previous measurements of charged mesons.

Notes: This paper presents a new method in TLM for very efficient computation of highly conducting thin shielding walls. Firstly, the impulse response of a finite conducting sheet is computed analytically via inverse Laplace transform. Subsequently, a recursive convolution integral is formulated with the analytical impulse response. This allows a very efficient and accurate calculation of the diffusion process through imperfectly conducting walls.
