    Notes: Abstract The development of synovial membranes in the posterior synovial portion of the rat temporomandibular joint was studied and the three-dimensional structure of the posterior synovial portion reconstructed from sagittal semithin sections. Reconstructions showed that the synovial membrane expanded and that synovial folds increased in number and became complicated in shape with the growth of the joint. Using transmission-electron microscopy, it was observed that the synovial lining cells degenerated, that the synovial membrane split to make further synovial folds, and that the folded-end structures consisted of synovial lining cells that extended into the subsynovial connective tissue. It is suggested that in the development of the three-dimensional configuration of the synovial membrane, several processes proceed simultaneously to form the synovial folds: a splitting of the synovial membrane, infolding of the synovial membrane into the subsynovial connective tissue, and outgrowth of the synovial folds towards the synovial cavity.

    Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to identify the brain regions activated in relation to oculomotor sequence learning. Nine healthy subjects participated in the study, which consisted of three positron emission tomography scans. In the initial learning task, subjects were instructed to track a sequence of seven successive positions of visual targets and to memorize the order of the targets as well as their spatial locations. In the saccade task, subjects were instructed to track visual targets presented at random locations. In the control task, subjects were instructed to gaze at a fixation point. Fields showing significant regional cerebral blood flow change were determined from task-minus-control subtraction images. We determined that fields in the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA), the intraparietal cortex, and the prefrontal cortex were activated not only in the learning-minus-control images but also in the learning-minus-saccade images. Although prefrontal and parietal activations were bilateral, pre-SMA activation was confined to the left hemisphere. The results indicate that these fields function as a part of the neural network involved in the learning of sequential saccadic eye movements.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to determine the functional organization of the human brain involved in cross-modal discrimination between tactile and visual information. Regional cerebral blood flow was measured by positron emission tomography in nine right-handed volunteers during four discrimination tasks; tactile–tactile (TT), tactile–visual (TV), visual–tactile (VT), and visual–visual (VV). The subjects were asked either to look at digital cylinders of different diameters or to grasp the digital cylinders with the thumb and index finger of the right hand using haptic interfaces. Compared with the motor control task in which the subjects looked at and grasped cylinders of the same diameter, the right lateral prefrontal cortex and the right inferior parietal lobule were activated in all the four discrimination tasks. In addition, the dorsal premotor cortex, the ventral premotor cortex, and the inferior temporal cortex of the right hemisphere were activated during VT but not during TV. Our results suggest that the human brain mechanisms underlying cross-modal discrimination have two different pathways depending on the temporal order in which stimuli are presented.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cortical motor areas activated in relation to unilateral complex hand movements of either hand, and the motor area related to motor skill learning. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured in eight right-handed healthy male volunteers using positron emission tomography during a two-ball-rotation task using the right hand, the same task using the left hand and two control tasks. In the two-ball-rotation tasks, subjects were required to rotate the same two iron balls either with the right or left hand. In the control task, they were required to hold two balls in each hand without movement. The primary motor area, premotor area and cerebellum were activated bilaterally with each unilateral hand movement. In contrast, the supplementary motor area proper was activated only by contralateral hand movements. In addition, we found a positive correlation between the rCBF to the premotor area and the degree of improvement in skill during motor task training. The results indicate that complex hand movements are organized bilaterally in the primary motor areas, premotor areas and cerebellum, that functional asymmetry in the motor cortices is not evident during complex finger movements, and that the premotor area may play an important role in motor skill learning.

    Notes: A new approach to three-dimensional nanostructures is discussed with the goal of fabricating vertical, ultrasmall tunneling junctions suitable for single electron devices. Pillars consisting of multiple layers of polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) (∼10 nm thick) and silicon nitride (∼2 nm thick) were laterally oxidized. The fabrication of vertically stacked silicon nanoislands, with dimensions on the order of 10 nm in all three directions, connected by thin silicon nitride layers, is demonstrated. The saturation of the polysilicon core diameter during the lateral pillar oxidation process is clearly observed, confirming the self-limiting effect for polysilicon pillars. This approach allows the fabrication of three-dimensional nanostructures using conventional silicon processing equipment. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An experimental study of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of thermal neutron capture therapy (TNCT) for melanoma cell inactivation using 10B1-paraboronophenylalanine (10B1-BPA) was carried out to demonstrate a high therapeutic effect of TNCT, compared with that of fast neutron. Cells preincubated with or without 10B1-BPA at a concentration of 50 μg/ml for 20 h were irradiated with 60Co gamma-ray, fast neutron or thermal neutron. The absorbed dose of the cells from thermal neutron was calculated by Kobayashi's model. The D0 value of fast neutron was 1.07 Gy, and the D0s of thermal neutron radiation with or without preincubation of the cells with 10B1-BPA were 0.46 Gy or 0.67 Gy, respectively. The RBEs of fast neutron, thermal neutron beams, and neutron capture therapy relative to 60Co gamma-ray were calculated as 2.78, 4.18, and 6.15 at 0.1 surviving fraction, respectively. These results indicate radiobiologically that thermal neutron capture therapy using 10B1-BPA is an excellent radiation therapy for malignant melanoma.

    Notes: Salivary gland scintigraphy was performed on 52 patients who were suspected of having Sjögren's syndrome (SS). and the results were compared with clinicopathologic features of the salivary and lacrimal glands. The time-activity curves which were obtained from computer-assisted analysis of 99mTc-pertechnetate (99mTc) scintigraphy were classified into four types (normal, median, flat and sloped types). The stimulated parotid flow rate decreased and the incidence of SS-related sialographic and histopathologic findings increased significantly as the scintigraphic abnormality advanced. In addition, the lacrimal gland function decreased and the proportion of patients diagnosed as having keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) increased significantly as the scintigraphic abnormality advanced. These results indicate that the results of scintigraphy are related not only to the clinicopathologic features of the salivary glands but also to the lacrimal gland function in SS.

    Notes: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is uncommon in men and there are few reports that describe their clinical features. In the present study, we investigated salivary gland manifestations in men with SS and compared the results with those in women patients. This study included 12 men and 117 women with SS, and the mean stimulated parotid flow rate in men (4.1 ml/5 min, n=10) was higher than that of the women (3.1 ml/5 min, n=10). The prevalence of SS-related sialographic findings, such as globular and punctate sialectasis, was significantly (P 〈 0.05) lower in men (3/11) than in women (72/117). The prevalence of grade 4 cases on labial salivary gland biopsy was also significantly (P 〈 0.01) lower in men (4/11) than in women (82/111). These results indicate a lower prevalence of SS-related clinicopathologic and sialographic changes in men with SS than in women with the same condition.

    Notes: A patient with malignant melanoma was treated by thermal neutron capture therapy using 10B-paraboronophenylalanine. The compound was injected subcutaneously into ten locations in the tumor-surrounding skin, and the patient was then irradiated with thermal neutrons from the Musashi Reactor at reactor power of 100 KW and neutron flux of 1.2 ± 109 n/cm2/s. Total absorbed dose to the skin was 11.7–12.5 Gy in the radiation field. The dose equivalents of these doses were estimated as 21.5 and 24.4 Sv, respectively. Early skin reaction after irradiation was checked from day 1 to day 60. The maximum and mean skin scores were 2.0 and 1.5, respectively, and the therapy was safely completed as far as skin reaction was concerned. Some factors influencing the absorbed dose and dose equivalent to the skin are discussed.

    Notes: There are only a few reports on the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of thermal neutrons and 10B(n,α)7Li reactions either in vitro or in vivo. The data in this paper summarize almost all previously published in vitro data. Because only a few reactors are available for biomedical purposes, it is difficult to make a comparison of data from experiments using the same kind of radiation, and also to make a comparison of data from experiments using the different kinds of radiations. However, it is indispensable for boron neutron capture therapy to make a radiobiological analysis. More intensive study, including repair process and oxygen effect, is necessary for establishing the fundamental basis of the clinical application of boron neutron capture therapy.
