Notes: Abstract A new approach for investigation of the generation of fast ions and hot electrons inside the same plasma volume in laser-produced plasmas is proposed. It is based on the spectroscopic observation of line radiation from singly and doubly excited levels with simultaneous high spectral and spatial resolution. The experimental results demonstrate the observation of fast ions from highly charged target material inside the plasma volume and suggest that the generally accepted scaling relations are seriously invalid under certain conditions. Even at rather modest intensities ions with energies of several MeV are observed.

Notes: Abstract The energy loss of heavy ions in matter is completely different from the case of laser beams. Whereas laser radiation produces a plasma on the surface of the target and heats the volume mostly by shock waves, heavy ions penetrate deep into the target with an almost-constant energy loss in the beginning and a very high energy loss at the end of the range, the so called “Bragg peak.” This special behavior offers excellent possibilities for the examination of critical points of different materials, the measurement of benchmarks for equations of state, production and detection of X-rays and XUV radiation, investigations in physics of overdense plasma, and many more topics. In particular, heavy ion beams are considered to be a very efficient driver for an inertial confinement fusion power plant. Thus, research on the elementary processes of the energy deposition of heavy ions in matter with respect to inertial fusion energy is of primary interest.

Notes: Summary Most testing problems involve a multidimensional parameter, only one component of which characterizes the hypotheses. In a mathematically strong sense, there are only two methods to cope with the remaining component, the so called nuisance parameter. Firstly, conditioning on a sufficient and complete statistic and, secondly, reduction by invariance. Both methods require strong assumptions on the underlying class of distributions. Therefore the local asymptotic approach is reviewed, which extends Neyman's theory ofC(α)-tests and yields, in a unified way, approximate optimal test statistics for smoothly indexed families. That device is applied to non-normal heteroscedastic linear models.

Notes: Summary There is an abundancy of problems in which no parametric model realistically describes the situation and in which, accordingly, we have to resort to nonparametric methods. As the numerical problems connected with nonparametric tests are becoming less and less important, rank tests, permutation tests and the like are becoming more and more part of the standard armatory of applied statisticians. The lack of tabulated critical values, for instance, should no longer be a serious objection against the use of permutation tests in practice; cf. Edgington (1987). The rationale underlying permutation and rank tests has been outlined in quite a number of text books and papers; cf. Fraser (1957), Lehmann (1959), Hájek-Sidák (1967) or Witting (1970). Roughly speaking, permutation tests are constructibel if the data can be condensed by means of a sufficient and complete statistic allowing for the proper kind of conditioning. Rank tests arise if the underlying problem is invariant with respect to (w.r.t.) a large group of transformations which leads to a maximal invariant statistic consisting of (signed) ranks. Most practical nonparametric problems, however, are too complex to be tractable by just one of those approaches. Many of them, however, can be handled by a combination of both techniques. In this paper we outline the logic underlying that combined reduction method and apply it to construct locally most powerful tests. Moreover, we discuss what we label “Hoeffding's transfer problem”, i.e. the uniformity aspect of locally most powerful tests with respect to the starting point at the boundary. We are concentrating on the discussion of the nonparametric two-sample location and scale problem. Further important problems are mentioned in Section III.
