    Notes: A new technique has been developed to remove flux quanta trapped in superconducting film. It consists of measuring the magnetic field distribution over a superconductor with an rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and removing the detected trapped flux using laser beam scanning. The trapped flux movement follows the motion of the Ar laser beam exactly. By scanning the laser beam over the trapped flux quanta, the trapped flux is successfully moved to any desired location. Comparison with heat flushing method, the most important advantages of this technique are (i) the flux movement in the superconducting film can be controlled precisely; (ii) by adjusting the laser power so as to change the diameter of the normal hot spot, flux creations caused by the thermoelectric potential of the material can be avoided. These results show that our technique is very useful in the field of Josephson junction electronics and other areas that require extremely low magnetic field environment.

    Notes: Magnetic-field distribution measurements over a patterned superconducting strip line sample were conducted using a superconducting quantum interference device pickup coil, showing that, in the range of 500 μG–50 mG of perpendicular magnetic field B⊥,i, the superconducting films record previous magnetic histories precisely. The magnetic-field distribution with a field B⊥,i applied at all times is identical to one with no field applied at any time. A calculation based on the flux trapping model explains these results indicating that all the magnetic fluxes penetrate the superconducting thin films.

    Notes: summary A new system for measuring threedimensional deformation has been developed. The main components of the system are a fixed TV camera and vertically scanning projectors. The advantages of the system are: (1) since there is no mechanical contact between the object and the sensing unit, hardness and form of the object do not have to be considered; (2) the system does not need any precise geometry except for the reproducibility of the vertical scanning stage; (3) the time required for one measurement is extremely short; and (4) the system is not expensive. From the basic experiments for testing accuracy, this system has about ± 30 μm range deviation against 1000 μm deformation of the object. The system has been applied to investigate the influence of various impression procedures for a removable partial denture on the displacement of the simulated soft mucosal tissue. It is revealed that deformation forms are expressed precisely. Our results suggest that this measurement system is quite useful for research in dentistry and that it could be widely applied.

    Notes: A method to measure the absolute intensity of a weak magnetic field is described. This method uses patterned superconducting strip lines as a spatial modulator of the field and detects the magnetic field distribution over them as a function of applied magnetic fields. The field distribution change measured by an rf SQUID system is proportional to the component of the absolute intensity of the magnetic field at the specimen that is parallel with the pick-up coil axis. The magnetic field intensity can be determined absolutely from about 1 μG by this method. A spatial resolution of the field as good as a few millimeters is obtained. Some practical limitations of this method and possible ways for improving are also discussed.

    Notes: A model of the nitrogen cycle and nitrate leaching in soil, called MORELN, was developed to calculate the nitrate flux percolating from soils into aquifers. It uses a “coupled model,” which simulates both surface and subsurface flows. A third model, NEWSAM, is linked to the above models to simulate nitrate migration in an aquifer system. This methodology gives a quantitative global description of nitrate transfer, taking into account both leaching in soils and migration in aquifers. Three examples of application tested this methodology (especially the nitrate leaching code, MORELN) at different scales and with different emphases: (1) in a soil plot of several square meters; (2) in a small experimental basin of several square kilometers; and (3) in a regional hydrogeologic system of several hundred square kilometers. Satisfactory results were obtained for the simulation of nitrate leaching at the small scale. Major differences between the measured and simulated nitrate concentrations were observed in a regional aquifer, where the measured concentration does not spatially correlate and the larger spatial variability of the input data were averaged in the model.

    Notes: Abstract Model calculations of the temperature changes expected in rapid meltings of polarized solid3He (Castaing-Nozières decompressions) are presented. After a complete melt, the development of temperature with time shows a strong polarization dependence, contrary to the final temperature reached. The results of partial meltings could, in principle, yield accurate information about the entropy of solid3He.
