Notes: Summary 1. A Chromatium sp. produces mainly lycopene (rhodopurpurene), spirilloxanthin, lycoxanthin (rhodopin), and a new pigment provisionally termed P-481. Lycoxanthin is the major component. Traces of three other polyenes were also observed. 2. Diphenylamine cultures of Chromatium show reduced synthesis of the normal constituent pigments and stimulation of the synthesis of the more saturated phytofluene series: Two new polyenes of the phytofluene series were observed; they were monohydroxy derivatives with chromophoric systems similar to those of ζ-carotene and neurosporene.

Notes: Summary 1. Three strains ofR. palustris synthesize lycopene,P 481, spirilloxanthin, lycoxanthin, hydroxy-P 481 and “demethylated” spirilloxanthin under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. One strain (8289) is characterized by a high relative concentration of lycoxanthin. 2. R. capsulatus andR. gelatinosa synthesize lycopene,Y, R, hydroxy-Y and hydroxy-R; the latter produces in addition spirilloxanthin and a new pigment,P 512. In both bacteriaY and hydroxy-Y predominate in anaerobic cultures andR and hydroxy-R in aerobic cultures. 3. Rsp. photometricum synthesizes lycopene,P 481, lycoxanthin, hydroxy-P 481 and lycophyll andRsp. molischianum, lycopene and lycoxanthin only. 4. Diphenylamine stimulates the synthesis of more saturated polyenes inR. palustris but has little effect onR. gelatinosa andR. capsulatus.

Notes: [Auszug] In a typical experiment with phytoene (ex carrot oil) 20 mg were treated with N-bromosuccinimide according to the method of Zechmeister and Koe9 for 8-10 min at 80-85 under carbon dioxide. The reaction mixture was chromatographed on a column of either CaO/'Celite' or alumina (Brockmann, grade V). ...

Notes: [Auszug] The only carotenoids which are known to contain such supernumerary groups are those predominating in the photosynthetic bacteria. These have methoxyl groups attached to either positions 3 and 3 or 4 and 4 ; the best known pigment of this type is Spirilloxanthin3 (Fig. 1), which represents more ...

Notes: [Auszug] There seems little doubt that the pigment present in the petals of Adonis anuida L. is an ester of astaxanthin or a very closely related pigment. Up-to now astaxanthin, which is widely distributed in invertebrates, has been unequivocally demonstrated in the plant world only in algae under ...

Notes: [Auszug] Archidoris montereyensis, the sea lemon, is a nudibranch of generally light, slightly dirty yellow colour, with small scattered brown, greyish or black skin-spots and a pair of elongated, finger-like, pointed rhinophore tentacles. Two whole specimens were finely comminuted under acetone in a Waring ...

Notes: [Auszug] Echinenone, first isolated from the urchin Para-centrotus lividus3, appears to be widely distributed in marine invertebrates, for apart from its presence in Echinocardium cordatum, noted here, it also occurs in the urchins Echinus esculentus2 and E. pictus*, in the gastropods Patella vulgata ...

Notes: [Auszug] It was considered of interest to see if a marine arthropod behaved in this way, or whether it followed the pattern observed by Goodwin3 using the locusts Schistocerca gregaria, and Locusta migratoria migra-torioides. In these insects the amount of p-carotene (which is present in considerable ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT has now been well established that ring C and N-9 and N-10 of ring B of riboflavin (I) are formed from a purine (II) derivative following the loss of C-8 of the purine1-2. For example, Plaut3 and his colleagues observed, that the labelling pattern in riboflavin synthesized by the mould Ashbya ...
