Notes: SUMMARY. The effects of a sewage effluent in Moat Brook, Staffordshire, were determined from regular collections of water and biological samples from directly comparable stations above and below the sewage outfall. The eutrophic conditions below the outfall result in the replacement of Polypedilum laetum by Chironomus riparius (except in the spring) as the dominant member of the Chironominae. Continuous recruitment of first instar larvae to the population of C. riparius in summer and autumn results in much overlap of generations, but emergence trap captures suggest at least five generations in the year. The usefulness of C. riparius as an indicator of enriched conditions in lotic ecosystems should be considered in relation to oviposition behaviour and the occurrence and seasonal variation in density of the adults and aquatic stages (including the more conspicuous third and fourth instar larvae).

Notes: Abstract We describe the conception and design process that led to the development of SmartSpace; a concept demonstration that integrates a number of technologies and computer peripherals into a semi-immersive work space, replacing the desk and computer of today with a ‘smart chair’. SmartSpace is a potential future working environment in which the user interfaces and interacts with their personal workstation in a more involving manner than facilitated by today's desktop computers. Large area projected and touch panel displays are combined with spatialised audio, allowing the user to become more involved with applications. Control is achieved using a mix of speech recognition, touch screen, rollerball, spacemouse and rotation of the chair itself. A number of demonstration applications are described and we indicate how such developments are likely to shape the workplace of the future.

Notes: Abstract A one-trial passive avoidance test in the mouse, in which drugs were injected intraperitoneally immediately after the shocked acquisition trial, was used. The effects of enhancing central cholinergic transmission on retention of passive avoidance was investigated using secoverine, which blocks muscarinic autoreceptor-mediated inhibition of acetylcholine release, and using physostigmine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Secoverine (1.0–5.0 mg/kg) and physostigmine (0.1–0.4 mg/kg) were found to improve retention of the avoidance response measured 24 h after acquisition. These effects were augmented when the two drugs were given in combination. In contrast, atropine (5.0 mg/kg) tended to impair retention of passive avoidance and blocked the facilitatory effects of physostigmine. The results support the hypothesis of a novel approach to treatment of memory disorders based on blockade of muscarinic autoreceptors, to augment central cholinergic activity.

Notes: Abstract Mature (3–4 months) and aged (18–19 months) Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were treated with 5-HT receptor agonists and drug-induced behaviours monitored. The 5-HT2/1C agonist, 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI), induced wet dog shakes and back muscle contractions which were significantly increased in aged, compared to mature, rats, suggesting an age-related enhancement of 5-HT2 receptor function. In contrast, the selective 5-HT1A agonist 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino) tetralin (8-OH-DPAT) induced forepaw treading, flat body posture, hypothermia and hyperactivity which were not significantly different in aged compared to mature rats. Levels of 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the hippocampus and frontal cortex were measured using high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. There were no age-related changes in hippocampal 5-HT or 5-HIAA. However both 5-HT and 5-HIAA were increased in the frontal cortex of aged SD rats. 8-OH-DPAT reduced 5-HIAA in both regions examined in mature rats, an effect which was attenuated in the aged rats, suggesting an age-related reduction in presynaptic 5-HT1A receptor function. DOI did not induce any changes in 5-HT or 5-HIAA in either of the regions examined. Radioligand binding studies with [3H] ketanserin showed there to be no significant age-related changes in cortical 5-HT2 receptor density or affinity. In the samples taken from mature rats GTP shifted the competition curve to DOI and reduced the proportion of high affinity agonist binding sites; this effect was not observed in the aged samples, suggesting that there may be age-related changes in G-protein-mediated receptor-effector coupling mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract The statistics say it all. 70% of customers choosing to leave a company do so because of bad service and 68% of these are leaving because of indifference from a staff member [1]. This research is looking at the critical interaction between BT and its customers whether face-to-face, over the telephone or through the Internet. In order to be successful in the future BT must not only provide world-class customer service, but it must be able to build meaningful relationships with its customers using both the medium and the message available. This isn't easy!

Notes: Abstract Using histological techniques together with transmission electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis, copper-containing granules (which also contain significant amounts of sulphur) have been observed in the cells of the malpighian tubules and in the subcuticular region of larvae of Plectrocnemia conspersa. It is suggested that the granules in both these regions are primarily pigment granules, which provide a mechanism for taking potentially toxic concentrations of copper (and possibly other metals) out of circulation. This mechanism of metal tolerance may in part account for the reported occurrence of larvae of P. conspersa in waters with elevated concentrations of trace metals.
