Notes: A mutation breeding programme using gamma rays and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) was carried out for genetic conversion of narcotic ‘opium poppy’ into non-narcotic ‘seed poppy’. Two families contained 31 latexless (opiumless) and 23 partial latex-bearing plants which were identified in the M2 and confirmed in the M3 generations by the ‘ray-pluck’ method. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-densitometry of powdered capsule hulls (straw) from 22 representative plants also revealed that none of the five opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine and narcotine) was present in the straw. Six plants also possessed high seed yield (4.0–5.66 g/capsule vs. 3.39 g for control) and seven had a high seed oil content (50.7-53.5%). The best mutant genotype, LL-34 of the family C1-Comb-113-2, with 5.66 g/capsule seeds containing 52.6% oil was designated as cv. ‘Sujata’. This, perhaps the world's first opiumless and alkaloid-free seed poppy cultivar, offers a cheap and permanent (fundamental) solution to the global problem of opium-linked social abuse. Simultaneously, it serves as a safe and potential food crop with protein-rich seeds and healthy unsaturated seed oil.

Notes: [Auszug] The striped pattern of the dorsal plate (pronotum, Fig. 1) provided ready identification of melanised cockroaches. When a melanised nymph moulted into an older nymph or adult, the abnormal coloration was lost together with the old cuticle. Since only the outer layers of the integument are shed at ...

Notes: Abstract Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) adults and nymphs provided with choice food did not discriminate against food treated (200 ppm) with either R-20458 or Ro 20-3600 indicating the absence of non-preference. Also, in a separate study with treated paper cards (0.5 mg/cm2), these two insect growth regulators did not exhibit any significant repellency to the German cockroach adults. Farnesol, however, was found to be significantly repellent. The bait formulations of synthetic insect growth regulators with juvenile hormone activity appear promising for the control of German cockroach.

Notes: Summary Unlike in the female, application of exogenous juvenile hormone I to 6th-instar male nymphs does not result in the retention of nymphal characteristics on the antennae and maxillary and labial palps. JH-treatment differentially affects the numbers of sensilla on the 3 appendages of adult maleB. germanica.

Notes: Summary Laboratory populations of German cockroach reared on food treated with R-20458 (75 ppm) or Ro 20-3600 (3000 ppm) became completely sterile and eventually extinct. The hypertrophied oocytes had excessively laid chorion, and the hypertrophied accessory sex glands contained excessive amounts of protein.

Notes: Abstract In the process of developing an alkali-resistant glass composition to be used as reinforcing fibres with cement, a glass in the system SiO2-PbO- Al2O3-R2O (R = an alkali metal) was adopted after some trials. The glass composition which possesses low melting point (1350° C), fair alkaline resistance (particularly in the long term) and appears to have satisfactory fibrilizing qualities, has the composition: SiO2 = 34%, PbO = 59%, Al2O3 = 3%, K2O= 3.5% and Na2O = 0.5% (wt%). The alkaline durability of the glass fibres (coated and uncoated) was studied at pH 9, 10, 11 and 12. There was no significant difference in the amount of extraction of the constituents in the leaching solution at pH 9 and 10. At pH 11 and 12 the amount of extraction value of the constituents initially increased up to seven days and thereafter no significant increase could be detected. The thermodynamic stability of the different oxides under present investigation (SiO2, Al2O3, PbO) in aqueous solutions at different pH values has been discussed with standard thermochemical data and it has been shown that alkaline durability of the glass fibres can be satisfactorily correlated with thermodynamic predictions. There is a lower value in the extraction of the constituents in the case of coated fibres, than those of uncoated fibres. An epoxy resin with a cycloaliphatic diamine improves alkaline durability.

Notes: The various sensilla on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps of Blattella germanica (L.) were studied. Thick-walled chemoreceptors with fluted shafts and articulated bases are located on the antennae and on the labial and maxillary palps. Thin-walled chemoreceptors, without fluted shafts or articulated bases, are restricted to the flagellar segments of the antennae and to the distal segments of the palps. Antennae of adult males have more thin-walled chemoreceptors than do those of females. Hair-plate sensilla are found at the scape-head and scape-pedicel joints, and at the joints of segments on the palps. Campaniform sensilla are concentrated as a ring around the distal margin of the pedicel, and are also scattered singly on the scape, pedicel, and flagellar segments of the antennae, and on the first segment of the maxillary palps. Occasionally, a few sensilla coeloconica and cold receptor sensilla are found on the antennal flagellum.

Notes: Light microscopy (LM) and scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) disclose seven types of hemocytes in adults of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) - namely, prohemocytes (PR), granulocytes (GR), plasmatocytes (PL), spherulocytes (SP), adipohemocytes (AD), coagulocytes (CO), and oenocytoids (OE). Their shape, size, surface appearance, and internal ultrastructure are characterized here. The shapes and relative sizes of hemocytes noted in vitro have been compared with those flowing through the wing veins (in vivo). The GRs constitute more than 90% of the hemocyte population and have roles in the defense system such as encapsulation and phagocytosis. They are characterized by numerous cytoplasmic granules and marginal microtubular bundles, which are commonly noted in the blood cells of both vertebrates and invertebrates, but have been rarely reported in insect hemocytes. The PRs are characterized by being spherical and small, having a relatively large nucleus and a small area of cytoplasm. The polymorphic PLs have some micropapillae on the cell surface and fewer granules than the GRs. The SPs are characterized by an oblate shape, raspberrylike appearance in SEM, and many spherules in the cytoplasm. The ADs are spherical and have large, refringent fat droplets. The COs possess a distinctive cartwheellike appearance when observed by LM but resemble GRs in TEM preparations. The OEs are opaque and often have an eccentric nucleus. Of the seven types of hemocytes, all, except the COs, can be recognized both in vivo and in vitro by LM; the COs can be recognized only in vitro. SEM does not allow the COs to be distinguished from the GRs, except in samples in which coagulation has occurred. All hemocyte types can be recognized by TEM. Thus, all three types of microscopy allow the various types of hemocytes to be recognized; unequivocal discrimination among the cells is best achieved by combining all the three kinds of microscopy.

Notes: Summary A reproducible and chemically stable inorganic ion-exchanger, niobium arsenate has been prepared by mixing acidic solutions of niobium sulphate and sodium aresenate in the ratio 1∶4 under different conditions. Its exchange behaviour after heat treatment has been studied. The analytical utility of this material is illustrated by its ability to separate quantitatively Ni(II) from V(V) and Fe(III). Mn(II) from V(V) and Fe(III).
