Notes: Photodissociation of NO has been investigated in the energy region between 8.89 eV, the energy required to produce N(2D)+O(3 P), and 9.26 eV, the ionization limit. Using the technique of resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), we have demonstrated that there are areas in this energy region in which there are large yields of N(2D), and others where the yields are small. Localized concentrations, from 2-hν dissociation of NO at 270 nm, are an order of magnitude greater than can be obtained from a discharge in N2.

Notes: N(2D) can be generated by two-photon dissociation of NO above the threshold wavelength of 279 nm. A comparison of the three-photon NO+ ionization signal with the N(2D) excitation spectrum resulting from its detection by 2+1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) shows both similarities and differences. The NO Rydberg states that are generated in the initial two-photon process either ionize or predissociate. The NO+ and N+ signals are indicative of predissociative lifetimes and channels, since an NO molecule that does not predissociate to N(2D) and O(3P) can separate to two lower atomic limits. In the 268–279 nm region there are three two-photon absorption bands, 5sσ-X 3-0, 4dπ−-X 2-0, and 5dπ−-X1-0, which show very high N(2D) predissociative yields from the upper states. A fourth band, 4dδ-X2-0, behaves in a distinctly different manner from its 4dπ− complex partner. The presence of the valence G2Σ− state, which lies within the experimental energy range, is not in evidence from either the three-photon NO+ spectrum, or from predissociation in the N(2D) channel. It appears that this state predissociates rapidly to the lower N(4S)+O(1D) or N(4S)+O(3P) limits, even above the N(2D)+O(3P) threshold.

Notes: The previous study [G. E. Gadd and T. G. Slanger, J. Chem. Phys. 92, 2194 (1990)] of the v=0–6 levels of the NO(B 2Π) valence state has been extended to the v=7 level, which is of particular interest because it lies at the first dissociation limit of the molecule, and also in a region where strong homogeneous mixing with the C 2Π Rydberg state manifests itself. Thus, the v=7 radiative lifetime can be affected by both these interactions, which are dependent on rotational level. It has often been argued that the B 2Π3/2 spin–orbit component interacts strongly with C 2Π1/2,3/2, whereas the B 2Π1/2 component is unperturbed. We show here that "unperturbed'' is a relative term and that a sensitive way to demonstrate that even the B 2Π1/2 levels are mixed with the C 2Π state is to measure the intensity branching in the B–X 7–v‘ vibrational progression from fluorescent spectra, for different rotational levels. In the present study, excitation of these levels is carried out on the B–X 7–0 band at 191–192 nm. We have investigated the lifetimes of both spin–orbit components of B 2Π(v=7) and find that the decreasing interaction with the C 2Π state with increasing rotational level, in spite of the increasing energy above the dissociation limit, leads to a steady increase in radiative lifetime. The value reached at high J is 350–400 ns, whereas the lifetimes of the Ω=1/2 levels that lie below the dissociation limit approach a value of 600–700 ns, consistent with the extrapolation of lifetime data for v=0–6.

Notes: The zero-pressure radiative lifetime of the NO(B 2Π) state has been measured over the vibrational level range v=0–6. Laser-induced fluorescence was the technique chosen for this study, using two different sources of ground state NO. In one case, photodissociation of NO2 at 193 nm was used to obtain a range of ground state vibrational levels, from which selected rotational levels were then pumped to the B 2Π state, while in the second case, NO in v=0 was directly pumped. The two methods of preparing the excited state gave identical lifetime results. The data show a linearly decreasing lifetime with increasing vibrational level and to a good approximation the lifetimes, are given by τ(μs)=2.00–0.193v. Recent calculations for the B–X system show excellent agreement with experiment at low v, and an increasing discrepancy with increasing vibrational level, the experimental lifetimes decreasing more rapidly than the calculated ones. The lifetime values fall within the 0.85–2.0 μs range for v=0–6, and are substantially different from the 2–3 μs values that are currently quoted. Comparison of the new values with data derived from absorption studies shows good agreement even for the high vibrational levels. Absolute Einstein A factors are presented for the v'=6 progression.

Notes: The general characteristics of boat wash, as affected by boat speed and water depth, are discussed. The classical deep-water wave pattern, with the most prominent waves at the forward edges of a V-shaped region of semi-angle 19 1/2°, becomes modified at high speeds. The effective angle of the V is then reduced and the waves become very long-crested.In moderately shallow water, the level of the water surface close to the boat (on either side of it) can be depressed by an amount which is greater than the amplitude of the downstream waves. In still shallower water, for boat speeds which would cause appreciable waves in deep water, the boat squats markedly and makes very large waves.Possible implications of these facts for bank erosion are discussed.
