    Notes: Abstract The major antigen complexes of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) include the latent infectious proteins, early antigens, membrane antigens and viral capsid antigens. The various polypeptides within each antigen complex have been identified and isolated through gene-cloning technology. These polypeptides are exploited to be used as serological markers for the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. This paper reviews the recent studies on the profile of antibodies in patients with NPC towards these EBV polypeptides of each antigen complex. The sensitivity and specificity of each polypeptide when used as serological markers to NPC patients' sera are summarized.

    Notes: Abstract The polymerization of styrene in ternary microemulsions stabilized by the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide was studied as a function of concentrations of water-soluble (potassium persulfate, KPS) and oil-soluble (AIBN) initiators. At a particular molar ratio of the initiators, similar maximum rates of polymerization can be achieved from using both types of the initiators. In addition, both initiated systems produced microlatexes with similar hydrodynamic radius, number of polymer particles, molecular weight of polystyrene and number of polymer chain per latex particle. But the dependencies of these latex parameters on concentrations of KPS and AIBN may not be the same. The polymerization mechanism appears to be similar, irrespective of using KPS or AIBN. It is discussed in terms of “effective radicals” produced for the polymerization. While the different dependencies of some latex parameters on concentrations of the initiators are attributed to the different efficiencies of the initiators in producing “effective radicals”.

    Notes: The photolysis reactions of a series of isomeric fully aromatic polyamides (aramids) have been investigated in the absence of oxygen by ultraviolet and luminescence spectroscopy. Several of the aramids were found to undergo photo-Fries rearrangements to give 2-aminobenzophenone backbone units when irradiated either as films, fibers, or dissolved in liquids. Quantum yields for this rearrangement were low, 〈 1 × 10-6 mole/einstein, and increased with decreasing aramid glass transition temperature and increasing backbone mobility. The formation of gel, carbon monoxide, and a strong ESR signal were consistent with a free-radical mechanism for the rearrangement.

    Notes: A series of isomeric fully aromatic polyamides (aramids) were photodegraded in the presence of oxygen. Films and fibers of these aramids gave carboxylic acids as the major products when measured by infrared spectroscopy and potentiometric titration. These acids probably resulted from the oxygen interception of the radicals generated by photocleavage of the amide bonds. In contrast to results found upon irradiation in the absence of oxygen, carboxylic acid formation was accompanied by a rapid loss in molecular weight, and a decrease in useful mechanical properties. Quantum yields for carboxylic acid formation were ≤5.5 × 10-5 mole/einstein and decreased along the aramid series roughly in agreement with increases in Tg. The photo-Fries rearrangement product was observed in aramid fibers irradiated in air, whereas no rearrangement product was seen in films irradiated in air.

    Notes: The characterization of eight fully aromatic polyamides are described with the procedures required to yield film- and fiber-forming materials. Solutions of these aromatic polyamides in dimethylacetamide were characterized by NMR and the effects of dissolved lithium chloride on these spectra investigated. The NMR resonances for specific protons in these polymers are assigned. The IR spectra of thin films and fibers of these polyamides are also reported, together with glass transition temperatures as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The value of NMR and IR to identify specific polyamide homopolymers and copolymers is discussed.

    Notes: Allyl esters of palm olein, palmitic, and oleic acids were synthesized by transesterification and esterification methods using KOH and absolute H2SO4 as catalysts, respectively. Three allyl esters, namely, allyl palmitate, allyl epoxystearate, and epoxidized allyl ester of palm olein, were successfully polymerized in the presence of t-butyl perbenzoate at 120°C to obtain oligomers with the average number of backbone atoms approximately equal to the number of skeletal atoms of the long-dangling side chains. The kinetic data of polymerization were conformed to the rate equation proposed by other workers. No oxirane cleavage was detected during the chain reaction. The melting behavior of these comb-shaped polymers was compared with that of their respective allylic monomers. The polymer of epoxidized allyl ester of palm olein exhibits a glass transition temperature at 204.4 K. The critical molecular weights of the polymers of allyl esters investigated are predicted to be not lower than 104.

    Notes: The particle sizes and their size distributions of latexes from the dispersion polymerization of styrene using a small amount of ω-methoxy poly(ethylene oxide)n undecyl-α-methacrylate macromonomer (PEO-R-MA-40) as a polymerizable stabilizer in ethanol-water media have been studied. Monodisperse or/and nearly monodisperse latex particles from 0.1 to 1 μm in diameter were readily obtained. The diameter of latex particles follows the relationship Dvad ∝ θ0.33 [PEO-R-MA-40]-0.60 [styrene]01.02 [AIBN]o-0.09, where θ is the fractional conversion of styrene. Except for the styrene concentration dependency, this relationship is in excellent agreement with the model developed by Paine11 and modified by Kawaguchi et al.13 When the surface composition of the grafted PEO macromonomer on the latex particles exceeded 16% as analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the particles were nearly monodisperse. In terms of polymerization, this occurred around 18% conversion of styrene. Beyond this critical state of polymerization, the latex particles grew bigger with more PEO macromonomer-styrene copolymers situated on the particle surface.
