Notes: Abstract With the object of designing a feasible and more radical surgical intervention for the treatment of carcinoma of the gastric cardia and improving the long term survival of these patients, a procedure was described which entails total esophagogastrectomy and resection of the distal pancreas, spleen and regional lymphnodes. The esophagus was mobilizedvia the diaphragmatic hiatus without thoracotomy. Intestinal continuity, installed isoperistaltically was restituted in the same operation using a segment of transverse and descending colon transferred to the left lateral cervial aspect by way of the posterior mediastinum. The procedure was used in four patients and mortality and serious complications were nil.

Notes: Abstract According to several properties, the active regions are divided in two groups whose limit is roughly set at 1021 Mx. A statistical analysis indicates that the small regions emerge almost exclusively in the remnant magnetic regions, resulting from the decay of previous active centers. According to these facts, a tentative picture is proposed, where the small active regions and perhaps also the ephemeral ones, are the secondary effects after the decay of the large active regions and complexes of activity.

Notes: Abstract Eighteen patients ranging in age from 32–82 years with benign distal esophageal stricture underwent and survived fundic patch operation. Twelve of these patients had undergone esophageal dilatation but without success. Five had had surgery for hiatal hernia using Hill, Belsey or Lortat-Jacob techniques. Middle laparotomy was done in five and left thoracotomy in thirteen. A fundic patch with a 270° fundoplication was performed in seven an a fundic patch with 360° fundoplication in the remaining eleven. The average hospital stay was 12.3 days. Dysphagia disappeared in seventeen and persisted for eight months in one patient. Three patients required instrumental dilatation for a few months. Endoscopic examination, pH study and X-ray fluoroscopy were done. Gastroesphageal reflux was nil in patients treated with Nissen's 360° fundoplication and three of these 7 patients without Nissen's fundoplication had gastroesophageal reflux. Epithelization of the patched esophageal wound was evident 6 months after the operation.

Notes: Abstract Non-modified silica gel, silica gel treated with AlEt2Cl, and ZnCl2 supported on silica gel are tested as catalysts in the Diels-Alder reactions of cyclopentadiene (1) with methyl acrylate (2a), (-) -menthyl acrylate (2b) and acrylonitrile (2c). In general, supported catalysts are more efficient than non-modified silica gel. Two different kinds of silica gel are tested and the amount of aluminium incorporated when they are treated with AlEt2Cl changes from one to another, which influences the chemical yield but not the selectivity of the reactions. In general, aluminium catalysts are more efficient than ZnCl2-supported ones in the reactions of acrylates, but the latter solid is a better catalyst in the reactions of acrylonitrile (2c). Differences in acid strength and hardness of the catalytic sites are invoked to account for these results.

Notes: CuI and CuII complexes of cyclic and open-chain polyaza compounds have been tested as catalysts in the benchmark cyclopropanation reaction of styrene with ethyl diazoacetate. In general, only small amounts of copper are needed to promote the reaction. The catalytic activity depends on the structure of the ligand, e.g. amine-amides are more efficient than polyamines, and on the oxidation state of copper, CuII being more active than CuI. Given that CuI is the active species, these changes of behavior must be related to the stabilities of the complexes. The nature of the counterion also has a noticeable influence on the catalytic activity, the role of which is discussed. XAS measurements suggest the formation of oligomeric species. Some of the chiral ligands lead to small enantiomeric excesses. Open-chain ligands can easily be supported on organic polymers and their complexes can be used as catalysts. Furthermore, cyclic and acyclic complexes can be supported on clays by cation exchange and the solids obtained tend to promote the reaction with a decrease in the trans/cis ratio.

Notes: The mass spectrometric behaviour of pairs of stereoisomeric mono- and di-substituted norbornanes, namely bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2-endo- and -exo-carboxylic acid, methyl bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2-endo- and -exo-carboxylate, 2-exo-acetamidobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2-endo- and 2-endo-acetamidobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2-exo-carboxylic acid and methyl 2-exo-acetamidobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2-endo- and 2-endo-acetamido-bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2-exo-carboxylate was studied in detail with particular emphasis on characterization of the stereoisomers. The fragmentation patterns, studied with the aid of mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometry, were supported by semi-empirical MO-SFC calculations, performed using the AM1 method included in the AMPAC program.

Notes: Differences in the mass spectra of Diels-Alder cyclohexene regioisomers are explained with the aid of a simple model based on the relative stability differences of the open-chain structures resulting from the alternative cleavage of the C(1)-C(2) and the C(5)-C(6) bonds of the 1-substituted cyclohexene ring. Theoretical SCF-MO calculations at a semi-empirical level proved to be useful tools for determining the relative stabilities of these open-chain radical cation structures and hence in the interpretation of mass spectra and the correct assignment of regioisomer structures from these spectra.

Notes: Solvophobic and polarity parameters are used to explain the endo/exo selectivity of the reaction between cyclopentadiene and methyl acrylate. A good linear regression model with Sp and ETN is obtained. The existence of an intrinsic correlation between the Sp and ETN values, which makes the interpretation of the results difficult, is shown. A comparison of the results with other previously reported showed that the relative influence of Sp and ETN on selectivity depends on the nature of the reagents.

Notes: Rate, endo/exo and diastereofacial selectivities of the Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and ( - )-menthyl acrylate were measured in a series of organic solvents and organic-aqueous mixtures. Regression analyses show that a model with the α empirical solvent parameter accounts for most of the changes in rates and diastereofacial selectivities, whereas in the case of the endo/exo selectivity, inclusion of the π* and δ parameters is needed. Theoretical calculations carried out on the model reaction between methyl acrylate and cyclopentadiene using dielectric continuum and supermolecule models do not clearly show the effect of the different solvation mechanisms on rate. However, they agree with the above-mentioned influence of α and π* on the endo/exo and diastereofacial selectivities.
