Notizen: Dispersions of carbon blacks and chopped carbon fibers in epoxy resins may be characterized by infrared internal reflection spectroscopy (IR-IRS). The high surface areas of the carbons (often ≥ 100 m2/g) ensure a high degree of interfacial contact between the carbon surface and the polymer. The crosslinking kinetics and final crosslinked state of an anhydride-cured epoxy resin are shown to be affected strongly by the carbons through adsorption of the tertiary amine catalyst at oxidation sites on the carbon surface. Oxidative treatments of the carbons (nitric acid oxidation, air oxidation) increase the effect on the crosslinking chemistry. Carbon dioxide treatment of the carbons, which produces a basic surface, reduces the effect on the crosslinking. The effects on the crosslinking kinetics were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The relevance of these results to the characterization of the interphase in carbon fiber/epoxy composites is discussed.

Notizen: The thermal oxidation, at 75-92°C, of antioxidant-free low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is faster in most aqueous environments than in air. The accelerative environments include water, solutions of sodium salts, and a basic buffer. However, an acidic buffer retards oxidation. Transition metal salts are not examined here since their catalytic effect is wellknown. The acceleration is predominantly a surface phenomenon, and so is most obvious in thin polymer films. For antioxidant-containing polyolefins, complications arise because of the possibility of extraction of stabilizers, but the trend in oxidative lifetime is similar to that of the antioxidant-free specimens, and the antioxidants are observed to react chemically during the aging process. For example, a commercial crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) shows a reduction in thermo-oxidative lifetime of at least a factor of two in aqueous environments compared to air. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) show similar behavior, but the magnitude of the effect of aqueous environments is less. This phenomenon is discussed in terms of nucleophilic attack by peroxy anions on hydroperoxides.

Notizen: The effects of carbon blacks, chopped carbon fibers, and crushed carbon fibers on the crosslinking chemistry of a diglycidyl epoxy resin/m-phenylenediamine system were examined by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The carbon and graphite surfaces were given oxidizing and reducing treatment to simulate the surface treatment of carbon fibers used in the manufacture of composites. The oxidized carbon surfaces initially accelerated epoxy-amine reactions but inhibited the later stages of the reaction such that the final extent of cure was reduced. The oxidized carbons also preferentially adsorbed the amine curing agent, resulting in a stoichiometric imbalance at the interface.

Notizen: The crosslinking chemistry of an anhydride-cured epoxy resin, in the first 200-400 nm adjacent to a carbonized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) surface (a model for the surface of a carbon fiber), is significantly affected by the humidity history of that surface. Prior humid aging of the carbonized PAN surface increases the subsequent rate of consumption of anhydride curing agent, and decreases the yield of ester crosslinked products. The crosslinking chemistry of an amine-cured epoxy resin appears unchanged by the presence of the carbonized surface. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of unidirectional composites made from carbon fibers and the above epoxy resin matrices shows that the damping characteristics of composites made with an epoxy-anhydride matrix are sensitive to the preconditioning history of the carbon fibers, while composites made with an epoxy-amine matrix are unaffected by the preconditioning history of the fibers. Partial removal of the carbon fiber surface coating by dichloromethane extraction does not change the sensitivity of the composites to fiber preconditioning history. These results are rationalized on the basis of the effect moisture adsorbed by the carbonized PAN and by the carbon fiber has on the epoxy resin crosslinking processes.

Notizen: Most polymers are eroded rapidly (〉0.1 μm/h) in the low earth orbit (LEO) environment when facing the direction of flight. The rate of erosion varies little with the polymer type, except for fluoropolymers and silicones. Methods for simulating such an environment are reviewed. Secondly, the oxidation lifetime of stabilized and unstabilized polyolefins can be reduced 50 to 90 percent, with a, high yield of carboxylic acid (i.e. chain scission) oxidation products, when thermal oxidation at 70 to 90°C takes place in 0.01 to 0.1 molar sodium chloride solutions, as compared to thermal oxidation in air. Both sets of observations illustrate the need for detailed mechanistic investigations before accelerated test procedures can be developed to predict material lifetime.

Notizen: The purpose of this brief communication is to demonstrate how near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy can be used to study specific interactions is miscible polymer blends. We will first demonstrate, using model systems and blends of polycaprolactone (PCL) and phenoxy [poly(hydroxypropylether of bisphenol-A)], that information obtained from the OH stretch overtone absorption in the NIR is consistent with the information obtained from the OH stretch fundamental in the mid-IR region. We will then illustrate the advantages of NIR analysis of specific interaction with spectra obtained, over a range of temperatures, from thick (2 mm) films of blends of Nylon-6 and the zinc salt of sulfonated polystyrene (ZnSPS). © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The cure of a tetrafunctional epoxy resin (largely tetraglycidyldiaminodiphenylmethane, TGDDM), cross-linked with diaminodiphenylsulphone (DDS) and boron trifluoride/ethylamine (BF3EA) catalyst, is affected in a complex fashion by the presence of an oxidized carbon fiber surface. If the fiber is aged in a humid environment (25°C, 95% humidity) before coating with the matrix, the affinity of the oxidized fiber surface for water leads to destruction of the catalyst and retardation of the cure. This retardation is noticeable at lower humidities if the polymer content of the composite is reduced to 〉 20%. For oxidized fibers that are stored under ambient conditions (40% humidity), the retarding effect of water is overwhelmed by the catalytic effect of the acidic fiber surface. This activates the latent catalyst, increasing the rate of epoxy consumption and the proportion of the epoxy-epoxy reaction relative to the epoxy-amine reaction. For the low-humidity case, even though the rate of chemical reaction is increased, vitrification of the matrix is retarded, implying that there is less cross-linking and more extended epoxy-epoxy sequences in the network. The proposed chemical changes in epoxy/carbon fiber composites were confirmed by analysis of model reactions in solution. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
