    Notizen: Abstract Several phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) were tested for their efficiency at 35°, 40° and 45°C. There was a marked variation in their ability to solubilise tricalcium phosphate and the effect was more pronounced at 45°C. Two bacterial and one fungal strain were found to be thermotolerant as they solubilised a large amount of tricalcium phosphate at the three tested temperatures. These thermotolerant strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis (TT0), Bacillus circulans (TT8) and Aspergillus niger (TT10). Seed inoculation of mung bean showed a better establishment of temperature tolerant strains as revealed by the rhizosphere population. The inoculation improved nodulation, the available P2O5 content of the alluvial soil, root and shoot biomass, straw and grain yield and phosphorus and nitrogen uptake of the crop. Among the bacterial strains, the best effect on yield was obtained with B. subtilis. However, statistically it was equivalent to streptomycin resistant mutant (M-20) and Pseudomonas striata (27). A. niger was less effective than bacteria. Though superphosphate was found to be a better source of phosphate fertiliser, the use of rock phosphate (RP40), coupled with phosphate solubilising bacteria (PSB), gave results comparable to superphosphate (SP20) + PSB inoculants.

    Notizen: Summary The dry-matter yield and nitrogen uptake of berseem (Trifolium alexand-drinum), yield, nitrogen uptake, nodulation and leghaemoglobin content of dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) inoculated with specific rhizobia were appreciably influenced by the application of sodium humate to soil under green house conditions. Even the application of sodium humate alone without bacterial inoculation had good growth stimulating influence on both the crops, and this effect was further improved by the application of inorganic nitrogen to dhaincha plants. A fair increase in the yield and phosphorus up-take of wheat (Triticum vulgare) inoculated withAzotobacter and/orBacillus spp. was also recorded with the addition of the humic material to the soil. The greatest effect was observed on the plants inoculated withAzotobacter andBacillus spp. together.

    Notizen: Summary Soils from rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere of maize and mung crops and an uncultivated field were analysed for organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity and pH. The rhizosphere soils showed higher carbon and nitrogen content than non-rhizosphere soils. Phenolic acids viz, vanillic, p-hydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric, salicylic and syringic and pyrocatechol were detected in different cultivated and uncultivated soils. Pyrocatechol was absent from rhizosphere soils of both crops while p-coumaric and salicylic acids were not detected in rhizosphere of mung crop and nonrhizosphere of maize crop respectively. Syringic acid was present only in case of maize. Gluconic, tartaric, and citric acids were also detected in different soils. re]19720712

    Notizen: Summary The effect of three pesticidesviz, simazine, lindane and ceresan upto 100-fold of field application was studied on organic matter mineralization as well as on nitrification rates in Delhi alluvial soil. The normal rate of simazine (2 ppm) did not influence CO2 evolution but higher concentrations suppressed it. Lindane and ceresan inhibited CO2 production from soil by normal concentrations but the same CO2 production was enhanced in berseem roots treated soil upto 10 ppm of ceresan. The nitrification of ammonium sulphate in soil due to these pesticides was impaired significantly for varying periods. The inhibitory effect of higher concentrations was marked only upto 3 weeks, subsequently the rate of nitrification was restored. Among the nitrifiers, Nitrobacter were more susceptible as compared to Nitrosomonas.

    Notizen: Summary Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of organic mulching on the nutrient status, microbiological properties and the yield of maize and green gram crops. Soil organic carbon and humin and humus carbon of the fallow and the cropped soils were augmented by mulching. More of nitrogen, available phosphorus and ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen were found in mulched soils. Soil reaction was not affected by mulching. Mulched treatments maintained more of soil moisture and soil temperature lowered during summer and rainy seasons. Population of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and Azotobacter were augmented in mulched treatments at all the stages of sampling. Mulching significantly increased the grain and straw yield of both the crops. The nitrogen uptake by grain was higher in mulched than in the unmulched treatments.

    Notizen: Summary Seven isolates belonged toA. brasilense and 3 belonged toA. lipoferum. Isolates having more denitrifying capacity fixed less nitrogen in nitrogen free semi-solid malate medium. One strain ofA. lipoferum having high nitrogen fixing capacity with negative test for denitrification was tested as inoculant to supplement the nitrogen need of a wheat crop in field condition with different doses of N with and without the inoculant. While control without nitrogen yielded 1260 kg/ha the yield in inoculated treatment was 2070 kg/ha resulting in significant increase. In a treatment receiving 40 kg N/ha the grain yield was 2370 kg/ha as against yield of 3110 kg/ha in a similar treatment receiving fertiliser plus inoculant. Thus increase in yield was about 30%. Further the treatment receiving 80 kg N/ha yielded 2970 kg/ha as against yield of 4150 kg/ha in a treatment receiving inoculant alongwith the above dose of the fertiliser. Thus increase in yield due to application of inoculant was about 36%. Similarly, the uptake of N in different treatments was augmented due to inoculation of seeds with the culture.

The organisms appreciably increased the yield and uptake of nutrients with or without chemical fertilizers. Phosphorussolubilizing microorganisms and a mixture of the three showed better response than the rest of the treatments among single and mixed culture inoculations respectively. Chemical fertilizers further improved the yield and nutrients uptake. The yield response remained unaffected by replacing superphosphate with rock phosphate and microbial inoculations.

    Notizen: Summary Three different types of organic materialsviz berseem hay, farm yard manure and wheat straw at two different rates were applied to an alluvial sandy loam soil and incubated at 30 MoC to investigate their rate of decomposition as well as their effect on the development of soil microflorai.e. bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi and Azotobacter. Berseem hay decomposed rapidly in the initial stages but after 30 days wheat straw + N and wheat straw alone released more CO2. FYM showed an uniform and steady rate of decomposition. Microbiological changes showed a fluctuating trend. In general, maximum increase in bacterial, actinomycete and fungi population was observed at 30 and 90 days period, followed by the lowest activity at 60 and 120 days. However, again an increasing trend was observed after 120 days of incubation period. Berseem hay showed the highest zymogenic effect in the initial stages. FYM had marked influence on the fungal population while wheat straw with and without nitrogen showed a decreasing trend. Azotobacter population was appreciably increased by the addition of wheat straw alone. Other treatments including wheat straw + N recorded a slight effect. Chemical analysis at the end of the experimental period indicated favourable effect of organic materials on humic acid content, organic carbon, total nitrogen and available nutrientsviz nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur. FYM increased organic carbon by 77% over control followed by wheat straw 75%. This suggests that the addition of FYM and crop residues has a positive effect on the maintenance of organic matter in the soil. The effect of different levels of organic materials showed only quantitative difference. In general, no marked variations were observed on the pattern of CO2 evolution, microbiological and chemical changes.
