Notes: Abstract We report our experience with the endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux by submucosal injection of Teflon in children. During a period of 40 months, 450 children and a total of 678 ureters were treated; 606 ureters were available with a follow-up of more than 3 months and examined by cystography. The overall success rate was 84.2% after one injection and 94.3% after two injections; 96.2% of the primary refluxes disappeared after two injections. We believe that in duplicated ureters and grade IV and V refluxes only one injection should be tried. If this fails we undertake surgical reimplantation. The success rate in neurogenic bladders and failures of previous surgical reimplantations allows surgery to be avoid in these difficult cases. We found seven non-pathological Teflon granuloma calcifications that had no influence on the results.

Notes: Summary A strategy for representative sampling in the analysis of river water is presented. Temporal and local variations of the concentration of 11 different water components in a selected river are recorded by means of suitable samples and the multivariate-statistical methods factor analysis and multidimensional variance and discriminant analysis in an optimal manner. By means of these results and the relation of the ascertained fluctuations of concentrations to the anthropogenic pollution in the river it is possible to draw practical conclusions with regard to sampling.

Notes: Summary FANES is an emission method, which in apparatus and in operational sequence resembles GFAAS. It was tested for application in analysis of river water and compared with GFAAS. The analysis of pure metal solutions shows accurate and precise results for both methods, but in contrast to GFAAS, the relative standard deviation for FANES increases to 12–45%, if different matrix components are added as in natural waters. It is necessary to improve the FANES method with regard to influences by matrix effects.

Notes: Abstract Element concentrations of 23 elements in different particle size fractions of aerosol samples from the island of Pellworm in the German Bight were analyzed by the help of total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis. These immission data were investigated with multivariate statistical methods. Multivariate correlation analysis, as a newer chemometric method, demonstrates the autocorrelation of the immission state for different particle size fractions of dustlike aerosols. The immission of smaller particles is more strongly autocorrelated than that of larger particles. The factor analysis of each particle size fraction allows the extraction of two pollution factors for each fraction. The weights of these factors, anthropogenic and sea spray, change with size. The anthropogenic factor is more highly weighed for smaller particles, the sea spray factor is stronger in larger particles. The dependence of factor scores for smaller particles on wind direction indicates the sources of the extracted factors.
