Notizen: Abstract Seventyfour asaccharolytic strains of Acinotobacter were tested for the presence of PQQ dependent glucose dehydrogenase apoenzyme. This apoenzyme could not be detected in any of five strains of Acinetobacter haemolyticus; it was also lacking in one strain of each A. junii and A. lwoffi.

Notizen: Summary In a prospective study involving a total of 87 ventriculostomies, ventriculostomy-related infections (based upon a bacteriological definition) developed in 15 patients (17.2 per cent). Intraventricular haemorrhage was related to a higher infection rate. Infection was most frequent within the first days after the external ventricular drain (EVD) was inserted. There was no relation between infection and the number of manipulations of the EVD or antibiotic treatment during the time of EVD placement.

Notizen: Summary The results of the treatment of 15 cases of ventriculitis related to the use of external ventricular drainage are presented. A review of the literature on the treatment of cerebrospinal fluid shunt infections combined with our data suggest the following treatment of venticulostomy-related ventriculitis: 1. Antibiotic treatment according to the resistance pattern of the infecting microorganism and 2. Removal or replacement of the ventricular drain. 3. One should wait for bacteriological cure before implanting a permanent internal drainage system.

Notizen: Abstract Seventy-seven clinical isolates ofXanthomonas maltophilia (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia) were consecutively collected from the Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, ribotyped and compared with the ribotypes of 25 other clinical and reference strains ofXanthomonas maltophilia. Using restriction enzymeEcoRI, 20 different ribotypes were observed, with 78 isolates displaying the five most common types. Using another enzyme,BamHI, these 78 isolates were further subdivided into 16 different ribotypes. Three patients harboured two strains with different ribotypes. No type was found related to only one department and no single-strain outbreak was detected. The origin of this wealth of different strains in hospital patients needs to be established.
