Notes: Summary The dispersion of higher modes of surface waves over a region covered by an array of stations can be measured by applying a frequency-wavenumber transform to segments of the signals in these stations, centered at a number of group-velocities. Thus, at a fixed period, modes appear as separate maxima in a display of the power spectrum on a phase-velocity vs. group velocity plane. For regions of mild lateral heterogeneity, the main source of error is shown to be due to the inadequacy of the array-response. Numerical experiments with synthetic signals indicate that a precision of the order of 1% can be obtained with a realistic number of stations. Improvements should be obtained by averaging data obtained from different events. The danger of misidentification of modes can be reduced by iteratively removing the sidelobes from the mode-separation diagram.

Notes: Abstract The arterial supply to the penis remains unclear. The frequency of occurrence and functional significance of accessory pudendal arteries remains controversial and it has been suggested that the presence of variations is correlated with atheromatous disease involving internal pudendal arteries. We dissected pelvic and penile arteries in 20 adult fresh male cadavers. The results are expressed according to age and the presence of atherosclerosis. Three patterns of penile arterial supply can be described: type I arising exclusively from internal pudendal arteries (3/20), type II arising from both accessory and internal pudendal arteries (14/20) and type III arising exclusively from accessory pudendal arteries (3/20). This study emphasizes the findings previously reported by early anatomists. No correlation between the presence of accessory pudendal arteries and the extent of atheroclerosis was observed. Accordingly we postulate that these variations are usually congenital. Terminal branches of accessory pudendal arteries mainly supply the corpora cavernosa. As they are located very close to the prostate, the risk of injury is high during radical prostatectomy. The possibility of impotence from such injury after radical prostatectomy needs therefore to be reconsidered.

Notes: Abstract Two new techniques in surface wave analysis, the modified moving window method and the method of stacking and cleaning, are used to determine average group and phase velocities over the area covering the Adriatic Sea and the Northern and Central Apennines, while avoiding the anomalous region under the Po plain. The data indicate that the lateral homogeneity of the region is sufficiently good to allow for an ‘averaged’ model of the lithosphere. Backus-Gilbert inversion of the data leads to an averaged model with a thick sedimentary cover (10–11 km), a normal continental Moho depth of about 35 km, and a velocity rise with depth below the crust. The extremely low group velocity data that are encountered both in the Apennine region and in the Adriatic Sea suggest a similarity between the crustal structure of this area and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Notes: Abstract In the seismic flow it is often observed that a Strong Earthquake (SE), is followed by Related Strong Earthquakes (RSEs), which occur near the epicenter of the SE with origin time rather close to the origin time of the SE. The algorithm for the prediction of the occurrence of a RSE has been developed and applied for the first time to the seismicity data of the California-Nevada region and has been successfully tested in several regions of the world, the statistical significance of the result being 97%. To date it has been possible to make five successful forward predictions, with no false alarms or failures to predict. The algorithm is applied here to the Italian territory, where the occurrence of RSEs is a particularly rare phenomenon. Our results show that the standard algorithm is successfully directly applicable without adjustment of the parameters. Eleven SEs are considered. Of them, three are followed by a RSE, as predicted by the algorithm, eight SEs are not followed by a RSE, and the algorithm predicts this behaviour for seven of them, giving rise to only one false alarm. Since, in Italy, often the series of strong earthquakes is relatively short, the algorithm has been extended to handle such a situation. The result of this experiment indicates that it is possible to attempt to test a SE, for the occurrence of a RSE, soon after the occurrence of the SE itself, performing timely “preliminary” recognition on reduced data sets. This fact, the high confidence level of the retrospective analysis, and the first successful forward predictions, made in different parts of the World, indicates that, even if additional tests are desirable, the algorithm can already be considered for routine application to Civil Defence.

Notes: Summary The entire prostate of a 10 year old boy was cut with a microtome into 4300 serial slices. The nerves were stained using a monoclonal antibody called anti PS 100. All information was recorded using a computer reconstruction programme. The prostatic nerve supply is very abundant. The nerve fibers of the cranial prostate (central zone) follow a pathway parallel to the anterior surface of the seminal vesicles going towards the caudal prostate. The periurethral zone is widely innervated by nerves arising from the periphery. The caudal prostate also contains many nerve fibers of variable size. We identified many nerve fibers along the anterior surface of the seminal vesicles and surrounding the lateral aspect of the prostatic capsule. They penetrate the capsule and the whole circumference of the caudal prostate. The prostatic capsule is covered by numerous nerve fibers and ganglia, which form a true periprostatic nerve network. The urethra is supplied by numerous thick fibers of more than 30 µm in diameter.
