    Notes: Abstract Waders residing in the Dutch Wadden Sea had high selenium concentrations in the tissues. These high concentrations may be a result of a contamination in the food chain, and a selection of marine invertebrate prey animals, the bivalves Macoma balthica and Mytilus edulis and the polychaete Nereis diversicolor, were analyzed for selenium. Selenium concentrations varied by year, season, location, species and size, but the average concentrations (2–6 mg/kg ash free dry weight) remained within the range of known background concentrations in marine invertebrates (1–10 mg/kg DW). However, the highest concentrations approximate the general (sub)toxic level of dietary selenium. The importance of the determination of the selenium compound(s) in marine biota is stressed Macoma had a seasonal variation in selenium concentration that may parallel the reproductive cycle; the highest concentrations (4–5 mg/kg AFDW) were found in the spawning period, the concentration dropped after spawning and in the recovery phase the bivalves were lowest in selenium (2–3 mg/kg AFDW). Intermediate concentrations (3–4 mg/kg AFDW) were measured during the gametogenesis. Concentrations changes in Mytilus corresponded with this pattern.

    Notes: Abstract On the basis of earlier reports on high selenium levels in organs of marine waders from the Dutch Wadden Sea, adverse effects in wader reproduction were anticipated. A local breeding population of the wader Haematopus ostralegus, oystercatcher, was examined for embryotoxicity and selenium levels in eggs and parental blood. Egg and/or blood samples from breeding oystercatchers were obtained also from two reference sites, a Dutch meadow nature reserve and a Norwegian Atlantic island. The blood selenium levels were high in the Dutch marine birds (red blood cells contained 21 mg/kg vs 0.1–1.2 mg/kg dry weight in man), but the highest red blood cell levels were recorded in the red cells of birds sampled at the Norwegian reference site (maximal value 42 mg/kg dry weight). Both the concentrations in eggs from the Wadden Sea and in eggs from inland pastures (about 2 mg/kg dry weight), were at background level and embryotoxicity was not observed. Considering the results, it was concluded that selenium is not a potential threat to the reproduction of waders from the Dutch Wadden Sea, despite the high selenium concentrations in the tissues of the waders foraging in this area. Selenium in egg white was about 1.6 times higher than in yolk. The first egg had a 10% higher egg white and a 19% higher yolk concentration compared to the subsequent eggs in the coastal clutches. Red blood cell levels were about 3.5 times higher in marine feeding birds than in inland feeding birds. Selenium concentrations in the plasma and red blood cells were positively correlated.

    Notes: Abstract The selenium distribution in the flight feathers of a marine wader, the Oystercatcher (Heamatopus ostralegus), is investigated. In the wing the highest concentrations are found in the outer primaries, notably primary 8. The inner tail feather exceeds the primary 8 concentration. Whithin the vane of a single feather, the highest concentrations are found in the tip, the lowest at the basis of the feather. The results are discussed in relation to the use of the feather as an indicator of selenium exposure. In comparing marine wader species shortly after completion of the feather growth, a negative relation is found between the fresh primary 8 vane concentration and body weight of the species. A functional role of selenium in respect to the metabolic rate is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Feather material has been investigated as suitable indicating tissue for heavy metal pollution. At least three different routes are described through which trace metal content in the feathers can increase: internal deposition during growth, contamination by the bird's secretion and outside contamination. As mercury is only deposited during feather growth, the feather burden reflects the internal contamination of the bird. Internal deposition of zinc appears to be well regulated in the shaft but concentrations differ widely in the vanes. No external contamination of the vanes could be demonstrated, so these levels reflect contamination from inside. Selenium and lead contamination can be deposited by the birds secretion. When the time elapsed after feather formation is accounted for, the feather can give indirectly an indication of the birds exposure to these elements.

    Notes: In computing the volume occupied by atoms and the density in proteins, one is faced with the problem of intersecting spheres. To estimate either, the space between the atoms has to be divided according to the location of the atoms relative to each other. Various methods, based on Voronoi's idea of approximating the atomic space by polyhedra, have been proposed for this purpose. Comparing procedures concerned with the allocation of space among distinct atoms, we observe different partitionings of space, with deviations of more than 100% for particular atoms. Furthermore, we find that the separating planes of different Voronoi procedures do not meet the intersection circles of covalently linked atoms. This leads to a misallocation of space of up to 7% for atom pairs that largely differ in atomic size (e.g., C - H). Several algorithms are negatively affected by small unallocated polyhedra (“vertex error”). These effects are cumulative for a small protein up to a loss of some 60 Å3 of total volume, which would correspond to the deletion of one complete residue. To overcome these errors, instead of using dividing planes between the atoms, we use curved surfaces, defined as the set of those geometrical loci with equal orthogonal distance to the surfaces of the van der Waals spheres under consideration. The proposed dividing surface meets not only the intersection circle of the two van der Waals spheres but also the intersection circle of the two spheres enlarged by an arbitrary value (e.g., radius of water). This hyperbolic surface enveloping the Voronoi cell can be easily constructed and offers the following advantages: no misallocation of volume for atoms of different size, no vertex error, geometrically reasonable allocation of the volume among atoms, avoidance of discontinuities between neighboring atoms, and improved applicability to water-accessible protein surfaces. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.   J Comput Chem 18: 1113-1123
