Conclusions 1. We have measured the rate constants for reactions of lanthanide and actinide ions at their lowest oxidation levels with C12 −, Br2 −, and I2 − ion-radicals. 2. We have shown that the rates of the reactions of Yb(II) and Sm(Il) with Br2 − and Ia −, and of Eu(II) with Cl2 are limited by diffusion, whereas those for the reactions of Np(III) and particularly Pu(III) are below the diffusion limit. 3. We have found that the logarithm of the rate constant for reactions of Np(III) and Pu(III) with Cl2 −, Br2 −, and I2 −, and also for Eu(II) with Br2 − and I2 −, depends linearly on the free energy of the process.
