Notes: Abstract Intraarterial digital subtraction angiography (IA-DSA) was performed in 80 pediatric patients. Forty-four underwent arterial injections with digital filming techniques. Of the 130 injections, DSA imaging was good or excellent in 121, often allowing resolution of vessels 1 mm in size. Thirty-six of the 80 patients underwent cardiac evaluation with intra-cardiac injections. Improved contrast resolution with IA-DSA allowed the use of smaller catheters (3–4 F) and smaller amounts of contrast material. Immediate availability of subtracted images (no film processing delay) resulted in shorter total procedure time. Outpatient studies are possible. IA-DSA provides several notable advantages for the pediatric patient.

Notes: Conclusions Based on these data, the percentages of MeP transferred in laundry were miniscule; however care should be exercised in laundering of pesticide contaminated clothing in the home. WP formulations may be most easily removed from the original fabric and most readily transferred to the clean fabric due to the particulate nature of their composition. Rinsing the laundry apparatus is recommended even though subsequent work may reveal more satisfactory ways to effect equipment clean up. Although the percentage of pesticide transferred by contaminated laundry apparatus may be slight in relation to a.i. made available in laundry of contaminated clothing, this amount may affect particularly susceptible individuals. These conclusions were based on Laundry-Ometer studies and before other recommendations can be made, further field work should be undertaken using home laundry appliances.

Notes: Conclusions The level of MeP concentration is inversely related to the amount of residue removed through laundry. As a result, higher pesticide concentrations or undiluted chemicals require utmost care in handling. Even following ten multiple launderings, residues of an undiluted MeP contaminant can be readily detected in fabrics, as well as cause mortality to German cockroaches within 24 h. It is recommended therefore, that clothing contaminated with high pesticide concentrations be disposed of by burning or burial, as the fabric remains unsafe to the wearer. Fabrics contaminated with lesser MeP concentrations (i.e. field strength) require a minimum of three launderings before biological activity reaches a harmless level. In addition, sudsy household ammonia as a laundry additive does not practically contribute to pesticide residue removal as the cost and amount of ammonia required to fill a washing machine is not feasible. Other laundry procedures, such as pre-rinsing and/or multiple washing, appear to be more effective.

Notes: Conclusions Based on the results of this investigation, contaminated denim fabrics should not be laundered in 30°C (85°F) temperature; hotter temperatures are more effective. Although detergents could not be statistically separated, heavy duty liquid detergents appeared to excel in providing higher levels of pesticide removal in water temperatures of 49°C and 60°C. To determine the optimal conditions for pesticide removal by laundering, additional investigations need to be made into the relationships between detergent, pesticide formulation, water temperature, and effects of multiple washings.

Notes: Abstract Dermal and respiratory exposure, and erythrocyte and serum acetylcholinesterase activity were monitored on two groups of professional pesticide applicators spraying trees with carbaryl. The mean dermal exposure to the first group was 128 mg hr−1 of carbaryl and the mean respiratory exposure was 0.1 mg hr−1. The maximum percent (%) toxic dose received by the applicators was 0.12% hr−1. The mean exposure to the second group of applicators was 59.4 mg hr−1 dermal and 0.1 mg hr−1 respiratory, for a total of 0.02% toxic dose per hr. It was estimated that 86.9% of the dermal exposure was to the forearms and hands. The rate of exposure to pads placed under the applicators clothing was approximately 1/20 that of pads on the outside of the clothing. Of the body areas monitored, the back received the least rate of exposure. It was determined,in vitro, that 10−3 M carbaryl would inhibit human serum (pseudocholinesterase) and erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase for at least 72 hr. There was no overall inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity in the applicators.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-eight urban volunteers from the Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska areas were monitored for carbaryl exposure during the summer of 1979. All volunteers were involved in the application of carbaryl incidental to their employment or leisure activities. The investigators made no attempt to affect the method of carbaryl application. The mean rates of carbaryl exposure were 3.85 and 0.26μg cm−2 hr−1, respectively, for the outside of the clothing and the skin beneath the clothing; clothing apparently provided an effective barrier to carbaryl penetration. The rate of carbaryl exposure to the hands of applicators was 2.36 and 24.96μg cm−1 hr−1, respectively, for applicators with and without gloves. The maximum dermal exposure recorded in this study was 2.86 mg kg−1 hr−1 which is significantly less than the stimated dermal LD50 value for carbaryl (4000 mg kg−1). The maximum air concentration of carbaryl was 0.28μg L−1, far less than the Threshold Limit Value of 5μg L−1. Only a small mean decrease was found in the applicators serum (−1.01%) or erythrocyte (−1.39%) acetylcholinesterase activity. Although some applicators had decreases in either serum or erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity greater than 20%, an equal number had increases of the same magnitude. The mean total carbaryl exposure to the applicators, expressed as a percent of toxic dose per hr, was 0.01%, with a maximum estimated exposure of 0.08%.

Notes: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows the counting rates as a function of time for protons (?3-17MeV) measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) experiment2 on both Voyager spacecraft from 1982 to 1984. The plotted data are 3-day averages. The dotted line on Fig. 1 is day 243, 1983, when the unusual plasma waves ...

Notes: Summary The cytology of teliospore germination and basidiospore formation inUromyces appendiculatus var.appendiculatus was characterized with light and fluoroscence microscopy. Meiosis of the diploid nucleus occurred in the metabasidium. The four haploid daughter nuclei migrated into the basidiospore initials where they underwent a post meiotic mitosis. Each basidiospore was delimited from the meatabasidium by a septum at the apex of the sterigma. Seventy-five percent of mature basidiospores were binucleate, 24.5% uninucleate, and 0.5% trinucleate. Mature, released basidiospores measured ∼ 16×9 Μm, were smooth-surfaced, and reniform to ovate-elliptical in shape.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the association of high-speed solar wind with coronal holes during the Skylab mission by: (1) direct comparison of solar wind and coronal X-ray data; (2) comparison of near-equatorial coronal hole area with maximum solar wind velocity in the associated streams; and (3) examination of the correlation between solar and interplanetary magnetic polarities. We find that all large near-equatorial coronal holes seen during the Skylab period were associated with high-velocity solar wind streams observed at 1 AU.
