Notes: This presentation reviews recent progress of Russian physicists in developing electronic devices of the gyroresonance type, which are so far the most advanced sources of millimeter microwaves. It deals with the concept of the gyrotron as a device operating at higher volume resonator modes with a built-in quasioptical converter of the output radiation into a wave beam. That concept made it possible to create comparatively simple and reliable long-pulse and quasicontinuous devices with a power level of 0.5 MW in the frequency band 30–160 GHz. Analysis of the principal problems of projects for continuous-wave (CW) gyrotrons of near 1 MW output power (choice of an operating mode, requirements to an electron beam, peculiarities of built-in converters) is included, as well as the results of model experiments. For amplifying millimeter wavelength gyroklystrons, a level of several hundreds of kW at the frequency 35 GHz, and up to 65 kW at frequency 94 GHz were also achieved. Some modifications of gyrotrons for material processing and special research are described. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we discuss the problem of implementing impedance control in the presence of model uncertainties and its application to robot force control. We first propose a sliding mode-based impedance controller. The implementation of the targeted impedance, and the preservation of stability in the presence of model uncertainties, are the key issues in the proposed approach. Using sliding mode control, a simple and robust algorithm is obtained so that the targeted impedance can be accurately implemented without the exact model of the robot. The controller is designed in terms of the task space coordinates. The chattering in the sliding mode control is eliminated by using a continuous function. The problem of force control is also addressed for the impedance controlled robot. An off-line estimation method of the environment model is suggested and used in the force control scheme. The proposed impedance and force control schemes have been experimentally verified on a two degree-of-freedom direct-drive robot arm. The experimental results are presented in this paper.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we address the topic of numerical computation in a system of multiple manipulators, one which has received scant attention despite a great deal of research in development of control schemes and the proliferation of similar work on single manipulator systems. Different approaches to computations in kinematics, statics and dynamics of multiple manipulator systems are studied and compared. The results show that significant savings in computational count can be achieved through customization of models. A systematic approach to customization is also described herein.

Notes: Abstract The electron distribution over residual energy after electron interaction with an rf field was determined using the method of decelerating electric field. It is demonstrated that, under the maximum efficiency conditions, electrons with an energy lower than 30% of their initial energy are absent in the spectrum. Hence, the efficiency of energy-recuperation gyrotrons can substantially be increased.

Notes: Abstract An analyzer intended for measuring electron energy in gyrotrons is described. Electron energy spectra are measured in various operating modes of an experimental gyrotron. It is shown that, even when no microwave field is generated, the spread in electron energy due to the space-charge effect can be as high as several percent.

Notes: Abstract The formation of an electron beam in a magnetron-injector gun of a gyrotron is investigated in the case when it is affected by the negative-mass instability due to the Coulomb repulsion and nonisochronous cyclotron rotation of particles. A technique is proposed for calculating the spread of the initial energy of electrons caused by the instability, which develops as the electron beam moves in the presence of a nonuniform magnetostatic field of the magnetron-injector gun. It is demonstrated that this instability can be one of the main factors providing the energy spread in electron guns of gyrotrons.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The recrystallization of an alloy with 43% Co begins at 650°C. Grains of a size of 1–2 μ were observed under the microscope after annealing for 6 hrs. The most vigorous grain growth occurred at 710–730°C. The growth ceased at 750–860°C. 2. The activition energy for recrystallization of the 83% cold-worked Fe-Co alloy with 43% Co for temperatures above 675°C was 67 kcal/g-at. 3. To study the recrystallization process proper, optical microscopy proved more sensitive than X-rays.

Notes: Abstract Cyclotron resonance masers, gyrotrons and gyroklystrons, are dominant high-energy sources at millimeter wavelengths and still have considerable margins of power and efficiency. The present-day challenge of creating CW megawatt gyrotrons is associated with many problems, among which the output window problem is a key one. New results of the investigation of gyrotrons and gyroklystrons in Russia are reported. A state-of-the-art analysis of gyrotrons for plasma heating in fusion installations and technological applications as well as gyroklystrons for millimeter-wavelength radars is performed.
