Notes: Consortium approach for nurse practitioner education In 1995, a 10-university consortium approach to deliver a post-baccalaureate primary care nurse practitioner programme funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health was launched throughout Ontario, Canada. A combination of traditional and distance teaching methods, in English and French, were used. A 5-year research project was initiated to evaluate the entire programme, the effect of nurse practitioners on patient and health-care system outcomes and examine practice patterns. Participants included deans and directors (n=10), regional co-ordinators (n=5) and course developers, some of whom were also course professors (n=8). This article is a report of the evaluation of the consortium programme after the first year from the perspective of groups involved in implementation and delivery. Results of qualitative analyses of participant perceptions from researcher-led focus groups and asynchronous electronic interviews provided the framework for the evaluation, and revealed the rationale for the consortium method, strengths, limitations and recommendations. Sharing ideas, resources and delivery and increased student access in remote areas were perceived as positive outcomes. Limitations included the short time period to develop programme content, identify and plan for distance education resources, and too little communication between universities and students. Researchers concluded that the consortium approach was effective for nurse practitioner education. Key factors identified for programme planning were communication, resources, curriculum and workload. Included among the recommendations was to allow sufficient time for role and course development before beginning a similar programme.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to describe the career patterns and job satisfaction of Ontario university and college nurse educators A descriptive survey design was employed using mailed questionnaires The sample comprised 60 nurse educators, 30 from three universities and 30 from three colleges Forty-four returned the completed questionnaire, giving a response rate of 73% The variables about the career patterns and goals of the nurse educators included their past and present job satisfaction Career patterns were described as stable, double-track, interrupted and unstable Similarities and differences were compared and described in relation to these factors Significant differences in job satisfaction were found between university and college faculty on nine of the 36 job characteristics (for example, leadership style, independence, autonomy and salary) There were no significant differences in job satisfaction for each of the career patterns and the selected demographic variables of age, years in nursing education, educational level and salary between the university and college faculty

Notes: A pre-post design was used to examine the effect of a senior preceptorship experience on the adaptive competencies, environmental press perceptions and learning styles of 55 third-year community college nursing students Kolb's experiential learning theory provided the framework for the study Subjects rated their concrete and abstract competencies and the importance of divergent and convergent competencies significantly higher following the preceptorship They also felt that the preceptorship experience contributed significantly more to their competency development than their weekly clinical experiences during the year Contrary to expectations, administration of the Learning Style Inventory LSI-1976 and LSI-1985 produced inconsistent classifications of subjects' learning styles Implications for nursing are described

Notes: Substantial use of clinical peer teaching among students has been reported, but there is limited description of outcomes and no reports of the use of a theoretical framework The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of peer teaching on baccalaureate nursing students’ clinical performance It was hypothesized that students who were taught by peers will (a) achieve significantly higher improvement scores than students taught by teachers alone, and (b) rate their preference for peer teaching equal to or higher than instructor teaching Bandura's (1971) social learning theory provided the framework for the study The experimental design involved 50 volunteer subjects on two surgical units, one for peer teaching and one for instructor teaching Data were collected from pre- and post-psychomotor and cognitive tests of a surgical dressing procedure and from a Clinical Teaching Preference Questionnaire (CTPQ) Experimental subjects achieved significantly higher cognitive improvement scores (t=167, P〈0 05) and moderately higher psychomotor improvement scores in support of hypothesis 1 Responses on the CTPQ showed support for hypothesis 2

Notes: A descriptive study investigating the effect of situational and constraint variables on leadership style is reported A sample of 35 administrators of college (diploma) nursing programmes and 106 of their senior faculty participated in the study The Leadership Style Analysis Instrument was used to determine the administrators’ leadership styles, as perceived by the administrators themselves and by their senior faculty Demographic characteristics of the administrators and constraint variables were examined by chi-square analysis (0 05) regarding their relationship to leadership styles It was found that despite variations in administrator characteristics and extent of constraints, the perceived leadership style was consistently relationship-oriented The results have implications for educators and administrators in nursing

Notes: The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine the relationships among preceptors' perceptions of benefits, rewards, supports and commitment to the preceptor role A convenience sample of 59 nurse preceptors in a 400-bed urban teaching hospital participated by completing a four-part questionnaire the Preceptor's Perception of Benefits and Rewards Scale, the Preceptor's Perception of Support Scale, the Commitment to the Preceptor Role Scale, and a demographic questionnaire Kanter's (1977) model 'Structural Determinants of Behaviour in Organizations' provided the conceptual framework for the study Three study correlations reached statistical significance, suggesting that commitment to the preceptor role is positively associated with (a) preceptors' perception of benefits and rewards, (b) preceptors' perception of support, and (c) the number of preceptor experiences The results have implications for nursing administrators and nursing educators to ensure that adequate benefits, rewards and supports are available to preceptors Recommendations for developing more effective preceptor programmes are proposed
