Notes: [Auszug] We employed two different experimental methods. In the first of these, the thermal conductivity was obtained directly using an absolute method4. A block of mica, which was built up from a large number of sheets, was cemented with 'Araldite' between two copper plates. The thermal resistance of the ...

Notes: Abstract A sintering process is described for the production of n-type bismuth telluride alloys, in which the powders are deposited from a dielectric liquid in a controlled manner using an electrodispersion technique. The degree of orientation is determined using an X-ray diffraction method and also by measuring the Seebeck coefficient in the intrinsic region of conduction. It is found that the results from the two methods are consistent with one another if one assumes a structural model that is intermediate between those of the thin disc and the long bar.

Notes: Abstract Germanium-silicon alloys of the composition Ge30Si70 have been prepared by hot pressing powder compacts at temperatures between 1300 and 1493 K (the solidus temperature) at pressures up to 40 MPa. The densification of the compacts was observed as a function of time. For each temperature and pressure an end-point density less than the full density was found. The time-dependence of the densification and the pressuredependence of the end-point density can be described empirically in terms of a plastic flow mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on steel samples are reported for a new type of hardness tester based on the measurement of thermal contact resistance. These experiments have been carried out using a machine-mounted probe and a newer hand-held double-probe. It is shown that, by using the double-probe, errors due to the sample not having reached ambient temperature can be avoided. Although, ideally, the thermal conductivity of the sample should be much greater than that of the probe tip, it is found that it is simple to apply a correction to the apparent hardness number if this condition is not met. The standard deviation in the Vickers hardness number H, that is yielded by the hand-held probe ranges from 10% to 14% as H changes from 150 to 850 kg mm−2, but the observations with the machine-mounted probe indicate that a much higher accuracy than this is possible.

Notes: Abstract Studies have been made of the electrical resistance at the contact between a silicon carbide indenter and various metals. It has been found that reproducible results can be obtained if the contact under load is subjected to a low-energy condenser discharge prior to the measurement of the resistance. After this pre-test operation, the electrical resistance is inversely proportional to the length of the diagonal of the indentation, as observed under a microscope. This allows one to define a hardness value, from the contact resistance measurement, that correlates well with the Vickers hardness. It is shown that the technique can be adapted to the continuous study of hardness under load for viscoelastic non-conducting materials.
