    Notizen: Abstract We have studied details of the phase separation of 3 He- 4 He mixtures in aerogel for 4 He concentrations between 13 - 36% and at pressures of 0 and 22 bar. Simultaneous measurements of the 4 He concentration (measured with a parallel-plate capacitor) and of the tortuosity of the 4 He-rich phase (using the period of the torsional oscillator) provide evidence for the diversity of configurations of the 3 He- 4 He interface as a consequence of capillary condensation. Thus, for the same 4 He content within the aerogel, the 4 He-rich phase can have different interconnectivities determined by preparation history.

    Notizen: Abstract We describe new torsional oscillator experiments on 3 He confined in 98.2% open aerogel. In one, we monitored the superfluid fraction of pure 3 He at T 〈〈 T c while we gradually changed the sample pressure. The resulting change in density alters ξ 0 of the superfluid 3 He relative to the distribution of the length scales (correlations) of silica in the aerogel. We observed a T = 0 normal-to-super fluid transition at a pressure of about 6.5 bar, in marked contrast to the bulk where liquid 3 He is superfluid at all pressures. In the second experiment, we measured the temperature dependence of the 3 He ρ s at a pressure of 21.6 bar with different amounts of 4 He present in the cell. Adding 2-3% 4 He slightly increases both T c and ρ s . We found that for 4 He concentrations between 2% and 34%, the 3 He T c increases by a very small amount. However, ρ s , which for pure 3 He in aerogel at 0.5T c is no more than 11%, falls by another factor of 7. This behavior (constant T c , reduced ρ s ) is similar to that observed in granular superconducting films where the long-range order is controlled by phase coherence between adjacent grains.

    Notizen: Abstract We have examined the superfluidity of 3 He in 98.2% porous silica aerogel with up to 34% 4 He at 21.6 bar. The mixture is phase-separated for 4 He fractions between ∼ 11% and 34%. The 4 He-rich, phase preferentially occupies the regions of highest silica density in the aerogel, thus modifying the distribution of the correlated disorder seen by superftuid 3 He. The 3 He T c increases slightly with 4 He content while the superfluid fraction decreases rapidly. This behavior is inconsistent with that of 3 He in a homogeneously scattering medium and is analogous to that of a granular superconductor.

    Notizen: Abstract We present the results of experiments on sound propagation at audio frequencies in 3 He-filled aerogel. Sound modes were observed at temperatures of 0.8–100 mK in an aerogel sample of 98% porosity. We find that below T c for superfluid 3 He in the aerogel matrix the speed of sound in the composite system increases by as much as 1.5%. Also below the aerogel T c new modes appear which correspond to propagation speeds of up to ∼10 m/s.

    Notizen: Abstract We have used a torsional oscillator to measure the superfluid density and dissipation near the superfluid transition of 3 He in aerogel of 99.5% porosity. We used a new cell (constructed at Penn State) for which the aerogel was grown in the pores of a ∼100 μm silver sinter. The cell was tested with 4 He and showed no signs of the second-sound resonances that have interfered with previous torsional oscillator measurements. The measurements with 3 He, presented here, were taken at pressures of 1.34 and 4.13 bars. We observed values of ρ s /ρ in the T→ 0 limit of 0.05 and 0.14 respectively. Our measurements show an increase in the dissipation on warming through T c . This series of measurements is ongoing and temperature sweeps at various pressures are planned.

    Notizen: Abstract We have measured the mobility of positive ions (“snowballs”) in liquid 3 He at magnetic fields H = 0 − 12 T and temperatures T = 0.3 − 10 mK. In normal 3 He, with increasing magnetic field the mobility first increases and then decreases nearly quadratically. The initial rise of the mobility is most strongly seen at the lowest temperatures (T = 2.5−3 mK) and high pressures (p = 29 bar) where at H = 6 T the mobility reaches a maximum enhancement of about 6 %. We attribute this effect to the suppression of the exchange scattering with magnetic field and thus infer the value of the exchange scattering cross-section. In the superfluid A 1 and A 2 phases, the relative increase of the ion mobility, as the sample is cooled below the transition temperature, is about twice as small as in the A or B phases.

    Notizen: Abstract We describe experiments on 3 He- 4 He mixtures in 98% open aerogel grown by cold-deposition (T≤80mK) of 4 He followed by the deposition of 3 He or alternatively by cooling down a homogenous mixture. The two approaches led to different 4 He film morphologies. We will also describe the observation of migration of 4 He from or toward the cell below 100 mK. This migration can lead to the exclusion of 4 He (other than the localized surface layers) for 4 He concentrations between 4% and 11% in the cell.
