Notizen: Grass and clover production and nitrogen cycling were compared in 1983 and 1984 at three sites: an upland peaty gley and upland and lowland brown earths. The clover varieties Olwen and S184 were compared in 1983 and S100 and S184 in 1984. Ammonium and nitrate sources of 15N were used to measure nitrogen recovery from fertilizer and soil, nitrogen fixation and nitrogen transfer from clover to grass. Acetylene reduction was measured once, in 1983, but isotope dilution was used in both years.Olwen clover produced more dry matter and took up more 15N than S184. Olwen fixed more nitrogen than S184 over the whole season, as measured by 15N isotope dilution. Companion grass took up more soil nitrogen when growing with S184 than with Olwen. The clover variety S100, tested at the lowland site in 1984, caused no significant variations in dry matter accumulation or N fixation. In the dry 1984 season, grass dry matter accumulation and 15N uptake were less than in 1983, and plants actually lost total nitrogen from their roots to the soil. Fixation rate varied more in 1984 than in 1983. Nitrogen transfer from clover to grass was detected by isotope ratio differences in 1983, and by total N differences in 1984.Site differences were dominated by the greater dry matter accumulation of Olwen in the lowland in 1983, but in that year there was also increased dry matter accumulation and increased 15N fertilizer uptake, but less nitrogen fixed on the mineral upland site than on the peat soil.Whether 15N was given as ammonium or nitrate made little difference in these experiments.

Notizen: Summary Eight selection lines for large or small individual leaf size inL. multiflorum orL. perenne were grown in pots at four phosphorus levels. Individual leaf size was increased by phosphorus treatment, but phosphorus did not interact with species or with selection lines within species. Total leaf length per pot was greater inL. multiflorum than inL. perenne, but did not differ within species, as the individual leaf size selection was offset by decreased tiller, and possibly, leaf number. Dry matter yield was higher inL. multiflorum than inL. perenne, and at high phosphorus level than at low. Phosphorus treatment increased shoot weight more than root weight, so root: shoot ratio declined. After ‘floating out’ the first crop and adding NaNO3, a test crop ofL. multiflorum was sown. Extremely consistent interactions between phosphorus and the first crop species were found, attributable toL. multiflorum exhausting low phosphorus levels, but not high levels, whileL. perenne diminished soil phosphorus differences to a uniformly medium amount.

Notizen: Summary Leaves from a half diallel cross between three populations ofL. perenne and three ofL. multiflorum were analysed for activity of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. Nitrate reductase activity was greater inL. perenne than inL. multiflorum and this correlated with variation in nitrate concentration in the plant. Nitrate reductase activity was significantly heritable at high nitrogen supply, but not at low nitrogen supply when presumably the inducer, nitrate, was limiting. Nitrite reductase activity also varied significantly between populations, but this variation was not significantly heritable.

Notizen: Summary Variation in the nitrogen content of seed of six barley cultivars was brought about by growing parent plants at four nitrogen levels. Shoot dry weight of plants grown for 23 days from these seeds was generally enhanced by an increase in seed nitrogen content. The most responsive cultivar was a primitive type of barley from Ethiopia. Cultivars with a longer breeding history were less responsive. Risø 1508 apparently had physiological and biochemical limitations in responding to extra seed nitrogen. In the barley cultivars studied extra seed nitrogen seems to supplement, rather than substitute for, nitrogen fertilizer in the seed bed.

Notizen: Abstract The stable isotope15N is particularly valuable in the field for measuring N fixation by isotope dilution. At the same time other soil-plant processes can be studied, including15N recovery, and nitrogen transfer between clover and grass. Three contrasting sites and soils were used in the present work: a lowland soil, an upland soil, and an upland peat. Nitrogen fixation varied from 12 gm−2 on lowland soil to 2.7 gm−2 on upland peat. Most N transfer occurred on upland soil (4.2 gm−2) which, added to nitrogen fixed, made a total of 8.7 gm2 input during summer 1985.15N recovery for the whole experiment was small, around 25%. Measurement of dead and dying leaves, stubble and roots, suggests that plant organ death is the first stage in N transfer from white clover to ryegrass, through the decomposer cycle. Decomposition was fastest on lowland soils, slowest on peat. On lowland soil this decomposer nitrogen is apparently subverted before transfer, probably by soil microbes. Variations in natural abundance of15N in plants were found in the two species on the different soils. These might be used to measure nitrogen fixation without adding isotope, but the need for many replicates and repeat samples would limit throughput.

Notizen: Abstract A microprocessor controlled apparatus is described which can measure, control and record nitrate uptake byLolium perenne in nutrient solution, comparing seven selection lines in duplicate. Nutrient solution flowed at 1 min−1, and linear response was found from 10−1 to 10−4 M NO 3 − . Uptake rates for Lolium were between 10−5 and 10−4 M NO 3 − , plant−1, h−1, which agreed with previous, manually determined, rates, ‘Overshoot’ in nitrate dosing, which was a problem with manual systems, was eliminated. Nitrate concentration was controlled (±3%) in modified Hoagland’s solution.
