    Notes: The reaction at narrow holes method (RANH method) has been proposed for fabricating fiber reinforced metal (FRM), such as an intermetallic compound fiber / metal matrix composite. This study clarifies a microstructure at a fiber / metal matrix interface of FRM fabricated by using a combination of pure-copper and pure-aluminum in the RANH method. Pure-aluminum fiber was inserted into a narrow hole drilled in the copper matrix. The assembly comprising the pure-aluminum fiber and the pure-copper matrix was heated to a temperature greater than eutectic temperature of the copper-aluminum binary alloy. A molten aluminum reacted with copper to form an annular reacted region consisting of g1 intermetallic compound in a single phase near the edge of the narrow hole. The g1 intermetallic compound has very high hardness on the order of 800-900 HV. The annular reacted region may have a high tensile strength and may work as a reinforcing metal fiber in FRM

    Notes: Abstract During the past eight years, 46 of the 106 patients who underwent mitral valve replacement were associated with tricuspid insufficiency. No surgical correction was performed (14 cases) in cases of slight tricuspid insufficiency. Tricuspid annuloplasty (11 cases) or valve replacement (21 cases) was employed according to the severity of insufficiency. In the non-repair group, the mortality rate was fairly low (21 per cent), but the postoperative status was the least satisfactory by the NYHA classification. Tricuspid insufficiency was significantly reduced only in two of these 14 cases after the mitral valve replacement. In the tricuspid annuloplasty group, although the technique of tricuspid annuloplasty did not always correct insufficiency completely, only one patient died of residual insufficiency. The cardiac output measured with Minnesota Impedance Cardiograph increased postoperatively in proportion to stress in this group. In the tricuspid valve replacement group, cardiac catheterization studies revealed hemodynamic improvement at rest in all, but cardiac output during exercise remained unchanged or decreased in some cases. Now we consider that tricuspid insufficiency with advanced mitral valve disease, even of a slight degree, should be surgically treated and that annuloplasty has more obvious hemodynamic benefits than valve replacement.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. The two objectives of this study were to design potent phosphorothioate antisense oligonucleotides (AS-S-oligos) directed against the human interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene product and to reveal the DNA sequence which best activates antisense effects. Methods. The design of potent AS-S-oligo was performed by using melting temperature (Tm) value of a DNA/RNA hybrid calculated by the nearest neighbor method and a secondary structure of human IL-10 mRNA suggested by RNA folding algorithms. U937 cells were used to estimate the antisense effect of the AS-S-oligos. Results. Of the eight candidates selected as potent AS-S-oligos on the basis of having higher Tm values and favorable secondary structures of the IL-10 mRNA, AS-S-oligos directed against the translated (AS367-S-oligo) and 3′-untranslated (AS637-S-oligo) region of IL-10 mRNA showed the strongest inhibitory effects on IL-10 production and this inhibition was dose- and time-dependent. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed that the antisense effects of AS-S-oligos originated from a specific reduction of target IL-10 mRNA by hybridization with AS367- and AS637-S-oligos. In addition, these AS-S-oligos did not affect human tumor necrosis factor-∝ (TNF-∝) production in the cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Strong positive correlations between the inhibitory effect of AS-S-oligos on the IL-10 production and not only Tm values calculated by nearest neighbor method but also Tm values determined by absorbance versus temperature profiles were demonstrated except for AS25-S-oligo and AS1249-S-oligo. Conclusions. These findings suggest AS367- and AS637-S-oligos powerfully inhibit IL-10 production in U937 cells via an antisense mechanism. In addition, it is suggested efficiency of AS-S-oligo directed against the sequence of the target gene product can be explained by these Tm values and the proposed secondary structures of the target gene product.
