Notizen: We present studies using a dc magnetron in an on-axis configuration to sputter Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films from a composite target. These studies show that bismuth can be preferentially resputtered. The influence of ozone, molecular oxygen, and total pressure on the resputtering of bismuth is investigated and discussed. Ozone, in low concentrations, can dramatically affect the degree of resputtering. By comparing the effects of molecular oxygen and ozone, some insight is gained regarding the possible mechanisms of negative ion formation in the magnetron environment. Based on our results we suggest that molecular oxygen can bring about resputtering primarily by forming O+2, which collides with the target to produce energetic negative oxygen ions. In contrast, ozone may form negative ions by electron impact in the dark space above the target, giving rise to lower-energy negative ions, which can traverse the plasma unneutralized and can be stopped with an applied bias on the sample block. With no added oxidant, negative oxygen ions from the target oxygen may dominate the background resputtering. Similarity is found between our results and those for similar studies on Y-Ba-Cu-O by other workers. Bismuth in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O behaves as barium in Y-Ba-Cu-O with regards to preferential resputtering; furthermore, the response of strontium, calcium, and copper to oxygen in sputtered Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O is similar to what is observed for copper in Y-Ba-Cu-O.

Notizen: Abstract The results of a combined experimental and numerical study on droplet behavior within an electrohydrodynamic fine spray are presented. The fine spray exists in the transition region between the multiple cone-jet and rim emission spray modes. Experiments were conducted specifically to characterize the motion of droplets within the spray. Light-sheet visualizations and measurements of droplet speed and velocity using laser-based, single-particle counters were obtained. Additionally, a numerical simulation of the droplet motion within the spray was made and compared to the experimental results. The electrohydrodynamic fine spray of ethanol droplets (∼ 1 to 40 μm diameter) was generated using a typical capillary-plate configuration, with a capillary tip electric field intensity of ∼ 106 V/m and a spray charge density of ∼70 C/m3. Acquired images of the spray revealed a zone of rapid expansion near the capillary followed by a more gradual expansion farther from the capillary. In situ laser-diagnostic measurements confirmed these observations. Measured droplet speeds decreased rapidly with increasing axial distance from the capillary, but then increased beyond the spray's axial mid-plane as a result of a change in the sign of the axial internal electric field. Droplet axial velocity components behaved similarly. The radial velocity components exhibited a maximum value off of the spray's centerline in the near-capillary region. Farther away from the capillary, they increased monotonically with increasing radial position. These trends identified the significant role that the radial internal electric field plays in spray expansion. The numerical simulation of the normal spray verified the inferred change in sign of the axial internal field and underscored the dominant contribution of the external electric field in the near-capillary region and of the internal electric field farther away.

Notizen: Abstract Experiments were conducted to assess the ability of a particle-counter-sizer velocimeter (PCSV) to measure droplet speeds in the developing region of an electrohydrodynamic spray. The working fluid, ethanol, was pumped through a stainless steel capillary tube at a constant mass flow rate. The capillary tube was held at various positive potential voltages with respect to an externally grounded funnel located below the tube. Data were acquired at two axial stations, directly under the capillary tip, in the developing region of the subject spray. The results indicated that the PCSV, with an experimental modification to the speed reduction process, performed well in this region. Speeds were measured at the near station within an average uncertainty of 2.2% and a corresponding maximum uncertainty of 3.0%; speeds at the far station were measured within an average uncertainty of 4.6% and a corresponding maximum uncertainty of 6.0%.
