    Notes: The sparse literature concerning the psychology of PPS is easy to summarize. Some psychopathology can be observed in PPS, but it is not clear whether it is a reaction to PPS or a by-product of a concurrent but unrelated disorder. Psychopathology does not seem to be responsible for the onset or intensity of new PPS symptoms. A relationship may exist between the perception of stress, an inability to handle stress, and perceived fatigue in PPS. Neuropsychological studies have been equivocal with patients performing well on some tests and more poorly on others compared to controls. An attempt has been made to link reticular formation and hypothalamic involvement in PPS to decreased attention and arousal and increased fatigue. Higher levels of fatigue have been associated with the presence of hyperintensities on MRI scanning. Unfortunately, a variety of methodological problems are present with most of these studies and indicate that caution should be used in their interpretation (see section on Methodological Considerations).Future studies should adapt more stringent controls in subject selection so that non-PPS factors that might affect behavior or cognition can be factored out (e.g., hypertension or exogenous depression). Tests specifically designed to evaluate components of attention and motor control can be used to test hypotheses regarding fatigue, arousal, and attention. Our experience is that patients carefully selected to have pure PPS without concurrent medical disease have few complaints about cognition or altered mood. Before we pronounce neuropsychological deficits in PPS patients, more carefully designed studies are required.

    Notes: The present study supports activation models of verbal short-term memory that include a semantic contribution to the retention process. Event-related brain potentials were used to probe the level of activation of semantic representations of a series of words in a delay interval following their presentation. The levels of activation were compared in two tasks: (1) a short-term memory task that involved a semantic judgment in the recall phase following the delay interval, and (2) a nonmemory control task. The level of semantic activation during the delay interval was higher in the short-term memory task, indicating that enhanced activation of semantic representations is involved in the short-term storage of verbal information. This result implies that activated long–term memory provides a representational basis for semantic verbal short-term memory, and hence supports theories that postulate that short- and long-term stores are not separate.

    Notes: Recent evidence that the cerebellum and the basal ganglia are activated during the performance of cognitive and attention tasks challenges the prevailing view of their primary function in motor control. The specific roles of the basal ganglia and the cerebellum in cognition, however, have been difficult to identify. At least three functional hypotheses regarding their roles have been proposed. The first hypothesis suggests that their main function is to switch attentional set. The second hypothesis states that they provide error signals regarding stimuli or rewards. The third hypothesis is that they operate as an internal timing system, providing a precise representation of temporal information. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we tested these three hypotheses using a task-switching experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial design varying timing (random relative to fixed) and task order (unpredictable relative to predictable). This design allowed us to test whether switching between tasks, timing irregularity and/or task order unpredictability activate the basal ganglia and/or the cerebellum. We show that the cerebellum is primarily activated with timing irregularity while the anterior striatum is activated with task order unpredictability, supporting their distinctive roles in two forms of readjustment. Task order unpredictability alone, independent of reward delivery, is sufficient to induce striatal activation. In addition, activation of the cerebellum and basal ganglia were not specific to switching attention because these regions were both activated during switching between tasks and during the simultaneous maintenance of two tasks without switching between them.

    Notes: The amygdala has been shown to respond to many distinct types of affective stimuli, including reward and punishment feedback in animals. In humans, winning and losing situations can be considered as reward and punishment experiences, respectively. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure regional brain activity when human subjects were given feedback on their performance during a simple response time task in a fictitious competitive tournament. Lexical stimuli were used to convey positive ‘win’ or negative ‘lose’ feedback. The frequency of positive and negative trials was parametrically varied by the experimenters independently from the subjects' actual performance and unbeknownst to them. The results showed that the parametric increase of winning was associated with left amygdala activation whereas the parametric increase of losing was associated with right amygdala activation. These findings provide functional evidence that the human amygdala differentially responds to changes in magnitude of positive or negative reinforcement conveyed by lexical stimuli.
