    Notes: Abstract  This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the dynamics of vortices formed by and shed from ripples under oscillatory motion. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to acquire detailed velocity measurements at several phases of oscillation for each of four flow conditions: three purely horizontal oscillations and a ‘real’ wave with a vertical velocity component. For each of the flows, the vortices were located in the flow maps and defined at each time-step by their circulations and sizes. These calculated characteristics were compared with the predictions from a discrete-vortex model (DVM) developed at the University of Wales, Bangor.

    Notes: The modulation of linear short waves riding on a long finite-amplitude solitary wave has been analyzed numerically. It is found that the maximum modulated wave number, frequency, and amplitude of short waves always occur at the crest of solitary waves. This paper shows that the modulated wave number on the crest of solitary waves increases significantly as the amplitude of the solitary waves increases, and that the modulated short wave frequency and amplitude on the crest increase almost linearly.

    Notes: A recently proposed lattice gas model for simulating surface waves at a free boundary is described in detail. Simulated waves are compared to linear theory and are seen to compare well, provided an additional parameter ε is introduced. This parameter, ε, is investigated and found to be required due to the density gradient produced across the fluid by the gravitational interaction. Its value and the values of the other model parameters are found for a range of gravitational strengths. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A novel numerical technique for simulating interfacial gravity waves is considered. The model comprises an immiscible, binary fluid lattice Boltzmann model incorporating a gravitational interaction and simulates two immiscible, viscous fluids of different densities with a sharp interface between them. The model is described and the accuracy of the technique is considered. Simulation results are presented and the wave velocities, the oscillation frequency and the damping rate are found and compared to theory. A good comparison is found suggesting that the lattice Boltzmann approach is indeed accurately mimicking the wave dynamics. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate the design and implementation of a fiber-optic-bundle beam delivery system for particle image velocimetry (PIV) applications. The system is designed for the transmission of high peak power pulses ((approximately-greater-than)20 mJ) from a Q-switched and frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser. A fiber bundle offers advantages over a single fiber in beam delivery systems for light sheet formation. The damage-limit-maximum power that can be transmitted is greater for the bundle than for any of its component fibers, and the quality of the derived light sheet is higher than that obtainable from a single large core fiber of power handling capacity equivalent to that of the bundle. The beam delivery system was demonstrated in PIV measurements on a premixed propane-air flame. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Internal waves are modelled in two different circumstances: in a continuously stratified fluid and at the interface between two immiscible fluids. This is done using the lattice gas approach. The standard single phase model and an immiscible two-phase model are both modified to incorporate gravitational interactions. Standing internal waves are set up in both models and are seen to oscillate under the action of the gravitational interaction. The results obtained suggest that the lattice gas approach can be a useful tool in the modelling of such phenomena. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a new technique which provides an instantaneous velocity profile of a flow field. A PIV system at Edinburgh University has been adapted to study the phenomenon of roping in a pneumatic particle conveyance rig. The principle features of this PIV system are as follows. Double images of the particles transported by the fluid are recorded on photographic film using a conventional camera. The displacement of the particle pairs, which determines the velocity at a particular point, is determined to an automatic analysis system. PIV is proving to be a powerful method in the investigation of roping. A rope is a high density ribbon of particles which is created when a uniform air-coal flow segregates at a pipe bend into two regimes: one has a low coal to air ratio whereas the second regime, termed the rope, has a high coal to air ratio. This particular problem is connected with the pulverised fuel (pf) pipes of coal-fired electricity generating stations. The flow, as seen on Figure 1, is reproduced in a 26 mm scale model encompassing the main aerodynamic features of pf pipes. The rope forms in the vertical to horizontal 90° bend, falls from the top to the bottom of the horizontal pipe and creats a deposit.
