Notes: Abstract The present study was designed to compare clinical, micro bio logic and histometric parameters of recurrent periodontal disease in areas which had been treated either surgically (SU) or nonsurgically (NS). Periodontal disease was induced for 6 months in 3 quadrants in each of 6 beagle dogs. 2 of the 3 diseased quadrants were treated by definitive surgical or nonsurgical therapy followed by plaque control for 4 months. 2 dogs were then sacrificed to provide histometric data. Periodontal disease was reinduced in the remaining 4 dogs by allowing plaque accumulation for 6 months after which the dogs were sacrificed for histometric analysis. Clinical parameters were recorded and darkfield microscopic analysis of subgingival plaque samples was performed at regular intervals. Following 6 months of plaque accumulation during disease reinduction, there were significant changes (p 〈 0.05) in the pocket depths, bleeding scores and attachment levels in both the SU and NS areas. These changes were accompanied by significant increases (p 〈 0.05) in the proportions of spirochetes and motile rods and decreases in the proportions of coccoid cells in both the SU and NS areas. There were, however, no significant differences between the SU and NS areas when clinical and microbiologic parameters were compared. At the end of disease reinduction phase, the length of inflammatory cell infiltrate and % inflammed connective tissue had increased significantly in both the SU and NS areas. However, there were no significant differences in any of the histometric parameters between the SU and NS areas after disease reinduction. The present landings suggest that progression of disease recurrence, measured in clinical, microbiological and histometric parameters, may be independent of the mode of previous periodontal therapy.

Notes: The present study was designed to examine the early phases of healing following root implantation in an attempt to compare the potentials of granulation tissue from bone and flap connective tissues to induce root resorption. Three adult beagle dogs with advanced periodontal disease were used and teeth 1P1, 2P2, 4P4, 1M1, and 3I3 were extracted to provide implantation sites. Eight weeks later, the root canals of the remaining premolars were filled with guttapercha. Using a flap procedure, the exposed root surfaces were thoroughly planed and the crowns were resected. The roots were then extracted and implanted in grooves prepared in edentulous areas with half the circumference of the root lying in the osseous groove and the other half of the root lying in contact with connective tissue of the mucoperiosteal flap. On one side of the mouth, the planed root surfaces were conditioned with citric acid for 3 minutes before implantation. Histologic sections cut in the transverse axis of the roots were evaluated at 2 wk (non-acid treated) and 3 wk (acid-treated) after implantation. Extensive root resorption and ankylosis were seen on the bone side of the acid-treated (3 wk) and non-acid treated (2 wk) roots. On the flap connective tissue side, connective tissue fibers were seen lying parallel to the root surface and resorption, when present, was minimal and usually confined to that part of the root close to the margins of the groove in bone. The results suggest that root resorption primarily originates from granulation tissue derived from bone. The potential of the flap connective tissue to induce root resorption is either less or delayed compared to the connective tissue derived from bone.

Notes: Abstract Transient global amnesia (TGA) has been defined as the presence of an impairment of short-term memory, retrograde amnesia and repetitive queries, without any other neurological signs or symptoms. The precise pathophysiology of TGA is unclear, although thromboembolic, epileptic, migrainous and metabolic mechanisms have been suggested. We have studied the clinical, biohumoral, electroencephalographic and neuro-imaging data relating to 25 patients with TGA, and found a prevalence of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. We also found a higher incidence of electrical changes in the patients whose TGA was of shorter duration, whereas brain CT scans revealed ischemic lesions more frequently in the patients with TGA of longer duration. Our findings seem to confirm the hypothesis that TGA is a heterogenous clinical syndrome consisting of pure and ischemic forms.

Notes: Summary The myoglobin content in the hearts of several fishes is positively correlated with the ecological physiology of the species. In the tuna heart, where the highest myoglobin values are found, the logarithmic relationship between myoglobin content and body weight is reported.
