Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the difficult problem of predicting the concentration (and temperature) fields of reacting flows in which the chemistry is modeled by a multicomponent set ofnonlinear reactions. A novel variable split-operator method is presented, which splits each individual chemical reaction at each point and for each step or iteration in such a way as to guarantee the nonpositiveness of the eigenvalues of the chemical Jacobian matrix. This helps to ensure stability/convergence of the proposed iterative scheme. The possibility of constructing accelerated schemes of this nature is also explored. Finally, computed results illustrate the usefulness and reliability of the proposed methods and provide evidence concerning their relative merits.

Notes: Summary The free vibrations, buckling and the effect of initial prestress upon the frequency spectrum of orthotropic composite cylindrical shells are examined in the context of a theory that includes transverse shear deformation. Results obtained are compared with the predictions of refined Love-type theory and simplified Donnell-type theory that do not consider shear deformation. The calculated examples indicate that transverse shear deformation can be significant not only for short composite shells but even for longer shells possessing low shear moduli.

Notes: Summary The vibrational response of orthotropic composite cylindrical shells subjected to axial compression is examined, following a refined Love-type theory. Results obtained are compared with those predicted by Donnell-type theory, as found in the literature. Important effects due to shell lay-up, length to radius ratio, radius to thickness ratio and fiber reversal are noted from the calculations performed for a number of double and triple-layered shells.

Notes: A new, reliable family of split-operator methods is presented for the computation of reacting flows. The methods may be inconsistent or consistent depending upon their applicability. Analyses are carried out for flow combusting according to general multicomponent, multireaction linear or non-linear chemical kinetic models, and conditions for guaranteed stability/convergence are established. A special chemical splitting parameter can also be embedded in the methods enabling accelerated convergence of an iterative finite-difference solution. Computed results highlight the capabilities and properties of the methods.
