    Description / Table of Contents: Summary It has been shown that, with the aid of theBeckman UV spectrophotometer, it is relatively easy to measure absorptions of the second harmonic over vibration of the CH-, OH-, and NH-group. The layer thickness to be employed for liquids is up to 1 cm; for solids, which must be used in 10% solution (in CCl4 or CS2) the layer must be 10 cm. It is possible to detect OH, NH, aromatic OH, paraffinic CH, and sometimes also olefinic and “hyperaromatic” CH (pyrrol, thiophene). Certain anomalies are exhibited by oxygen-containing compounds. It is proposed that the “Varal index” be used as a practical value for characterizing aromatic-aliphatic products. This index represents the ratio of the maximum extinction of the aromatic to those of the aliphatic CH bonds.
    Abstract: Résumé Avec l'aide du spectrophotomètreBeckman, il est relativement facile de mesurer l'absorption du second harmonique de vibration des groupes OH-, CH- et NH-. L'épaisseur de la couche à employer est de 1 cm pour les liquides; pour les solides, que l'on emploie en solution à 10% (dans CCl4 ou CS2) l'épaisseur atteint 10 cm. Il est possible de détecter OH, NH, CH aromatique, CH paraffinique et quelquefois olifénique et CH «hyperaromatique» (pyrrol, thiophène). Certains composés oxygénés présentent des anomalies. On propose l'emploi de l'index «Varal» comme valeur pratique caractérisant les produits aliphatiques-aromatiques. Cet index représente le rapport des maxima d'extinction des liaisons CH, aliphatiques et aromatiques, respectivement.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, daß man unter Zuhilfenahme desBeckmanschen UV-Spektrophotometers Absorptionen der zweiten Oberschwingung der CH-, OH- und NH-Gruppe bequem messen kann. Die anzuwendende Schichtdicke beläuft sich für Flüssigkeiten auf 1 cm, für Feststoffe, die dann in 10%iger Lösung (in CCl4 oder CS2) vorhanden sein müssen. auf 10 cm. Eine qualitative Deutung von OH, NH, aromatischem CH. paraffinischem CH und bisweilen auch von olefinischem und „hyperaromatischem“ CH (Pyrrol, Thiophen) ist möglich. Sauerstoffhaltige Verbindungen zeigen gewisse Anomalien. Als praktische Größe für die Charakterisierung aromatisch-aliphatischer Produkte wird der „VARAL-Index“ vorgeschlagen (Verhältnis der maximalen Extinktion der aromatischen zu derjenigen der aliphatischen CH-Bande).
