Determination of the PH dependence and the activation energy of the oxygen adsorption on platinum from aqueous solutionsThe authors have studied the spontaneous adsorption of oxygen on platinum from an aqueous electrolyte as a function of the duration of adsorption at various PH value and at a 25, 50 and 75 ° C; the method used was the galvanostatic establishment of cathodic charge curves. The analysis of the curves required the determination of the double layer capacity at various PH levels, and of the roughness factor of the platinum surface. It has been shown that adsorption can be described in terms of the kinetic curve according to Elovich. The analysis of this equation yields a rather high an activation heat which allows the conclusion that a dissociative chemisorption of oxygen atoms is involved. The shape of the curve indicates, that the double layer accepts water molecules in the neutral region and OH- and H3O- ions in the alcaline and acid regions respectively. Tests with rotating disc electrodes have not shown a linear dependence of the adsorbed oxygen quantity and the square root of the angular velocity. This finding allows the conclusion that oxygen adsorption in stirred systems is not purely diffusion controlled.
Notes:
