Notes: The grain boundary passivation effect in polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) thin films by hydrogen implantation has been studied. Boron-doped polysilicon was implanted with low-energy ions followed by low-temperature annealing. Resistivity measurements show that the change in resistivity after implantation depends on the boron concentration in polysilicon. At low boron concentration (〈1×1019 cm−3), three orders of magnitude decrease in resistivity has been achieved. However, at higher boron concentration (〉1×1019 cm−3), the resistivity increased after hydrogen implantation. This increase is ascribed to implant-induced damage which cannot be totally recovered by low-temperature annealing.

Notes: Direct numerical simulations of the transition process from laminar to chaotic flow in converging–diverging channels are presented. The chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive supercritical Hopf bifurcations to periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic self-sustained flow regimes. The numerical experiments reveal three distinct bifurcations as the Reynolds number is increased, each adding a new fundamental frequency to the velocity spectrum. In addition, frequency-locked periodic solutions with independent but synchronized periodic functions are obtained. A scenario similar to the Ruelle–Takens–Newhouse scenario of the onset of chaos is verified in this forced convective open system flow. The results are illustrated for different Reynolds numbers using time-velocity histories, Fourier power spectra, and phase space trajectories. The global structure of the self-sustained oscillatory flow for a periodic regime is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Primiparous women were divided into groups according to their post-partum trait anxiety scores. Professional or non-professional support for the first 12 months was offered to two subgroups of high trait anxiety subjects. At the 5-year follow-up the high-anxiety mothers (n= 57) manifested more psychological and social pathology than moderate- and low-anxiety mothers (n= 43), and their children also showed signs of poorer adaptation. There was evidence of improved outcome for mothers in the professional intervention group, but not for their children. Child psychopathology was predicted best by maternal psychosocial variables, and to a lesser extent by child temperament variables. The relation of infant attachment and temperament measures to subsequent psychopathology is discussed.
