    Notes: Effect of grain size on magnetoresistance (MR) and electrical and magnetic properties of double perovskite Ba2FeMoO6 (BFMO) have been investigated. BFMO samples with different grain size have been prepared by the conventional solid state reaction followed by sintering in a stream of 5% H2/Ar at 1100 °C with various sintering times. The size of grain increases with increasing of sintering time. Temperature dependent magnetization is the same for samples with different grain size. However, electrical resistivity ρ(T) and MR are affected by the grain size; the ρ(T) and the MR value decrease with an increase in grain size. In spite of the different grain size, the ρ(T) shows a metallic behavior below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Low magnetic field applied to the sample considerably reduces the resistivity over the whole temperature. The magnitude of MR for the sample sintered for 5 h is as large as 31% and 7% with the magnetic field of 0.7 T at 12 and 300 K, respectively. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Polyimide blends consisting of pyromellitic dianhydride/4,4′-oxydianiline (PMDA/ODA) and biphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydride/p-phenylene diamine (BPDA/PDA) show a distinct glass transition behavior at temperatures lower than each component does. Disruption of molecular packing by blending of polymers having dissimilar interaction sites leads to a significant increase in molecular mobility at much lower temperatures. This is examined by laminating two pieces of film cast from the blend and measuring the adhesive strength at the interface. A strong adhesion, 11.5 N/cm (6.6 lbf/in) by 180° peel test, was achieved indicating interpenetration of polyimide molecules. It was also found that the polyimide blends can be converted into highly ordered states by mechanical deformation of the blends above their glass transition temperatures (Tgs).

    Notes: The molecular structure, crystallization, solid-state morphology, thermal properties, and phase behavior of two copolymers consisting of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) mid-block coupled to polycaprolactone (PCL) end-blocks were investigated. Both copolymers (which differ only in the molecular lengths of the PCL end-blocks) were found to be lamellar systems, whose core consists of PCL chains having the same crystal structure as PCL homopolymer, and whose amorphous interlayers contain the PDMS blocks and the PCL noncrystalline segments. From x-ray and electron-microscopy results, it is expected that the PCL blocks may be folded once in the longer copolymer and not at all in the shorter. As a result of their differing PCL lengths, the former crystallizes as regular PCL spherulites (at a growth rate reduced with respect to PCL homopolymer), whereas the latter yields only defective, immature axialites of low overall crystallinity. Electron diffraction showed that these spherulites grow preferentially along b crystallographic axis and that the PCL crystalline stems are arranged perpendicularly to their lamellae. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
