Notes: SUMMARY:  A 57-year-old man was admitted to hospital because of motor aphasia on 16 September 2000. He had an approximate 2-year history of haemodialysis treatment, since April 1997, and had received a cadaveric renal transplantation in July 1999. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mass with ringed enhancement in the left temporal-parietal lobe. Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (diffuse large B cell type) was diagnosed based on an open brain tumour biopsy. Epstein–Barr virus early RNA (EBER) in situ hybridization showed positive signals in the nuclei of the CNS lymphoma cells. A dose reduction of immunosuppressant and three series of high-dose methotrexate (MTX) therapy with leucovorine rescue followed by irradiation (whole brain irradiation, 30 Gy; partial brain tumour irradiation, 20 Gy) were carried out for his primary CNS lymphoma. The patient is currently in good condition (September 2004) with no enlargement of the lymphoma, as examined by MRI every 3 months, and preserved renal function.

Notes: Abstract We will describe here the ultrastructure of HeLa cells cultured in either roller bottles for 8 days or 10 days or in Petri dishes for 7 days. Junctional complexes could be seen between adjacent cells in aggregates formed in roller bottles. The junctional complexes were serially located especially near the free surface of the cells which occupied the outer layer of the aggregates. Two elements of the junctional complex, i.e., tight junctions and intermediate junctions, were observed between adjacent cells. The density and the diameter of microvilli in the intercellular space between cells cultured in roller bottles were denser and narrower than those of microvilli on the free surface of the cells. Junctional complexes and dense microvilli formed intercellular secretory canaliculus-like structure observed in the intercellular space of certain secretory glands.

Notes: Abstract Morphological features of HeLa cells cultured in soft agar medium for 20 days were studied. Under phase-contrast microscopy, cells were observed to have formed packed colonies which looked like balls. The boundary between each colony and agar matrix was clear. Several cells produce tubule which were considered to be intercellular canaliculus-like structures, in which microvilli were seen on their luminal surfaces. Simple appositions, composed of two cell membranes which ran parallel between cells forming the intercellular canaliculus-like structures, were seen. Junctional complexes—tight junctions, desmosomes and zonulae adherentes—could also be seen between adjacent cells. Especially common were the tight junctions frequently seen closed to the luminal surface that composed the intercellular canaliculus-like structures.

Notes: Abstract A case of co-occurrence of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) and a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the esophagus is described. The present patient was a 61-year-old man who underwent a curative esophagectomy with a regional lymph node dissection for a MEC in the lower esophagus and a SCC near the esophagogastric junction. The two lesions were endoscopically and histologically divided by a normal esophageal mucosa. The MEC of the esophagus consisted of SCC cells and signet-ring cells, and a mucin product and carcinoembryonic antigen, which were found at high levels in the blood serum before surgery, were detected histochemically in the signet-ring cells. The follow-up survey of the patients with esophageal MEC previously reported in Japan showed that most of the patients died of either local recurrence or widespread metastasis after treatment; the overall 5-year survival rate was 24.4% in the total 25 cases, and 27.7% in the 22 resected cases. However, 6 patients who died of therapeutic complications were included among these patients; furthermore, the 5-year survival rate after surgery was 29.2% in the patients treated over the last decade (1989–1998). We expect that the clinical outcome of patients treated for esophageal MEC will therefore improve in the future.
