Description / Table of Contents:
Summary Sensory and motor disturbances centered around the facial, oral and pharyngeal area constitute the most severe handicaps in the cerebral palsied population. A short survey of the currently available therapeutic approaches is given. In more than 100 patients during the last ten years we used in addition individually modified orthodontic devices and witnessed many unexpectedly good results. Close cooperation with habilitation and rehabilitation specialists (dentists, orthodontists, developmental neurologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists) who have sufficient insight into general and local postural interactions, is mandatory. Thus the devices are always modified according to the actual sensory and motor situation and also to the immediate needs of functional training and developmental steps in the individual patient.
