Summary In Bleiberg-Kreuth (Carinthia, Austria) luminescent sphalerites were found. They show in the filtered ultraviolet, beside the familiar yellow luminescence, also red, blue, green, and violet colours. As demonstrated by experiments, the luminescence of natural zinc-sulfide is caused by activators, such as Cu, Ag, Mn, and Fe, in trace quantities. The same elements were identified in the luminescent sphalerites of Kreuth by spectrographical investigations. The activating minor elements are arranged periodically in planes parallel (111) orientated by the tetrahedronal faces.
