Notes: Summary The ALGOL-procedure1 char2 presented in this paper can be applied to the initial or initial-boundary value problem of a quasilinear hyperbolic differential equation of second order. A method of characteristics is combined with extrapolation to the limit. Thus, the results are very accurate. The same accuracy can also be obtained if the initial values are only piecewise smooth.

Notes: Summary The procedurediwiex presented in this paper provides an approximate solution to Cauchy's initial value problem for general hyperbolic systems of first order. The procedurecharex can be applied to the initial value problem for a hyperbolic system of quasi-linear differential equations. This second method is a kind of method of characteristics. It produces a solution for the whole domain of determinancy. Both procedures use extrapolation to the limit.

Notes: Summary A new variant of the multi-grid algorithms is presented. It uses multiple coarse-grid corrections with particularly associated prolongations and restrictions. In this paper the robustness with respect to anisotropic problems is considered.

Notes: Summary In a recent paper we described a multi-grid algorithm for the numerical solution of Fredholm's integral equation of the second kind. This “multi-grid iteration of the second kind” has important applications to elliptic boundary value problems. Here we study the treatment of nonlinear boundary value problems. The required amount of computational work is proportional to the work needed for a sequence of linear equations. No derivatives are required since these linear problems are not the linearized equations.

Notes: Summary The convergence analysis of a special variant of the additive Schwarz iteration is presented. It can be applied to the frequency decomposition multigrid method and yields robust convergence.

Notes: Summary A recently published paper describes a numerical method for the fast solution of discretized elliptic eigenvalue problems. Here we report the results of this technique applied to the biharmonic (plate) equation. 46 eigenvalues (24 single and 11 double ones) are computed and the corresponding eigenfunctions are plotted.

Notes: In the case of convection dominated problems, multigrid methods require an appropriate smoothing to ensure robustness. As a first approach we discuss a Gauss-Seidel smoothing with a correct numbering of the unknowns and if necessary a special block partitioning. Numerical experiments show that, in the case of general convection directions, the multigrid algorithms obtained in this way have the same properties as in the model situation. If the graph arising from the convection part is acyclic, we describe a numbering algorithm which is valid for all spatial dimensions. Cycles give rise to special blocks for a blockwise Gauss-Seidel smoothing. We describe an algorithm for the two-dimensional case. The proposed algorithm requires a computational work of optimal order (linear in the size of the problem). © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
