Notes: Resistance exercise (RE) training, designed to induce hypertrophy, strives for optimal activation of anabolic and myogenic mechanisms to increase myofiber size. Clearly, activation of these mechanisms must precede skeletal muscle growth. Most mechanistic studies of RE have involved analysis of outcome variables after many training sessions. This study measured molecular level responses to RE on a scale of hours to establish a time course for the activation of myogenic mechanisms. Muscle biopsy samples were collected from nine subjects before and after acute bouts of RE. The response to a single bout was assessed at 12 and 24 h post-exercise. Further samples were obtained 24 and 72 h after a second exercise bout. RE was induced by neuromuscular electrical stimulation to generate maximal isometric contractions in the muscle of interest. A single RE bout resulted in increased levels of mRNA for IGF binding protein-4 (84%), MyoD (83%), myogenin (approximately threefold), cyclin D1 (50%), and p21-Waf1 (16-fold), and a transient decrease in IGF-I mRNA (46%). A temporally conserved, significant correlation between myogenin and p21 mRNA was observed (r=0.70, P〈or=0.02). The mRNAs for mechano-growth factor, IGF binding protein-5, and the IGF-I receptor were unchanged by RE. Total skeletal muscle RNA was increased 72 h after the second serial bout of RE. These results indicate that molecular adaptations of skeletal muscle to loading respond in a very short time. This approach should provide insights on the mechanisms that modulate adaptation to RE and may be useful in evaluating RE training protocol variables with high temporal resolution.

Notes: Abstract Traumatic alimentary tract (AT) perforations in children secondary to instrumentation, though rare, can occur at any age, especially in neonates and young infants. Awareness of such a possibility is essential for prompt management to be initiated. Over a 10-year period (1986–1995), eight pediatric patients with AT perforations secondary to instrumentation were managed at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. Five had upper AT injuries that included three hypopharyngeal, one esophageal, and one gastric lesion. The remaining three patients had lower AT injuries involving the transverse colon in one and the rectum in two. All the patients but two (one with a hypopharyngeal and one with an esophageal injury) were managed surgically and all survived. These rare injuries are discussed in addition to the preventive measures to be taken.

Notes: Abstract. Neutrons and light charged particles produced in 62.9MeV proton-induced reactions on 208Pb were measured during a single experiment performed at the CYCLONE facility in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). Two independent experimental set-ups were used to extract double differential cross-sections for neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and alpha-particles. Charged particles were detected using a set of Si- Si- CsI telescopes from 25° to 155°, by step of 10 degrees. Neutrons were measured using shielded DeMoN counters, liquid NE213 scintillators, at 24°, 35°, 55°, 80° and 120°. These data allowed the determination of angle differential, energy differential and total production cross-sections. A comparison with theoretical calculations (MCNPX, FLUKA and TALYS) has been performed. It shows that the neutron and proton production rates are well predicted by MCNPX, using the INCL4 option. All the other codes underestimate the neutron production whereas they overestimate the proton one. For composite particles, which represent 17% of the charged particle total reaction cross-section, neither the shape nor the amplitude of the cross-sections are correctly predicted by the models.

Notes: Abstract The execution of most large water projects in Lebanon has been continuously postponed, due to political reasons for the period preceding 1975 and to the civil war after that date. The accumulated impacts of mismanagement and shortage in water supplies forced population to drill their private wells and extract groundwater to meet their increasing needs. This uncontrolled action has significantly deteriorated the quality of groundwater, reflected in the increasing salinity of extracted water from coastal aquifers, and in the contamination of many wells and springs by improperly disposed waste water. The overexploitation of the aquifers has led to considerable decline in the discharge of springs and rivers amounting 18.8% between the 1960's and early 80's, irrespective of rainfall fluctuations. This study shows that the water budget in early 1980's has decreased appreciably, relative to 1960's budget. In Mount Lebanon basin the amount of precipitation dropped from 2700 to 2214 m3 yr−1, the rivers, discharge declined from 1320 to 834 Mm3 yr−1, and the recharge to groundwater decreased from 733 to 601 Mm3 yr−1.
