Notes: Summary Graded degrees of micrencephaly were produced in the progeny of rats given 0, 14, 22, or 30 mg methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM Ac) per Kg b.wt. on gestation day (GD) 15. Brains of animals from five litters were examined at each dose level. Golgi-Cox-stained sections prepared from brains of progeny of rats given 25 mg MAM Ac/kg on GD 15 were also evaluated for four micrencephalic and four control animals. Each increase in dosage of MAM Ac resulted in significantly greater loss in brain weight in the progeny. The largest effect was on the telencephalon. In the low dose group the telencephalon, though noticeably smaller, was structurally normal. The two higher doses resulted in easily visualized neuropathologic lesions in both the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. The external layers of the cerebral cortex were most severely affected. Layers V and VI were much better preserved but measurements on pyramidal cells in layer VI in the Golgi-Cox-stained sections showed them to have significantly fewer dendrites and spines than the normal animals. In addition to an intrinsic disorganization of the neocortex, periventricular nodular heterotopias and hippocampal ectopias were common. All the structural anomalies were most severe at the highest dose, though they were also readily apparent at the intermediate dose. The findings suggest to us that MAM Ac treatment during gestation not only produces an acute lesion resulting in the destruction of many proliferating neuroblasts, but that many of the surviving neuroblasts may sustain a chronic lesion altering their subsequent development.

Notes: Summary Rats with bilateral anterior and posterior hippocampal lesions (APH), anterior hippocampal lesions (AH), and controls were trained on CRF for water, and then switched to FR-20. Both hippocampal groups adapted more readily than controls to the FR-20 schedule and maintained significantly higher rates for 45 days. There were no significant differences on FR-20 between the lesion groups. Following FR-20, the rates of all groups were equalized by training on FR-30. During subsequent extinction, the APH group made significantly more responses than both the AH and control groups, while AH and control groups were indistinguishable. The acquisition results were interpreted as indicating increased emotional reactivity to delay of anticipated reward in both hippocampally lesioned groups. The extinction results suggested that APH, but not AH, lesions also result in increased perseveration.

Notes: In an effort to attain a better understanding of the nature of the defects introduced in GaAs by irradiating it with energetic light ions; electron or proton irradiated n-type GaAs samples, cut from the same layer grown by molecular-beam epitaxy, have been studied by deep level transient spectroscopy. By comparing the spectra, including the effects of high electric fields, and by using results for annealed samples, it is possible to determine which of the traps reported in electron irradiated GaAs, most of which are believed to be arsenic interstitial-vacancy pairs, are present in the proton irradiated material. The traps identified in proton irradiated GaAs include most of those found in electron irradiated material, either after irradiation or after irradiation and annealing. The results indicate that two of these traps are associated with defects which are more complex than simple interstitial-vacancy pairs. Two traps were found in proton irradiated material which have not been observed in electron irradiated GaAs. One of these is nearly as abundant as the prominent E3 center observed in electron irradiated GaAs and is probably also not a simple pair. The deep level transient spectroscopy peak for this trap is not clearly separated from that of E3 in proton irradiated GaAs. The other trap is probably associated with a particular impurity present in the MBE grown sample layers.

Notes: Abstract The possible roles of prostaglandins and a neural pathway in the disruption of the blood-aqueous barrier in the rabbit eye after cyclocryocoagulation were studied. Both the preoperative IV administration of the prostaglandin inhibitor acetylsalicylic acid and the application of retrobulbar and topical anesthesia reduced IOP and decreased breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier, as measured by protein in the aqueous humour. These results imply that the acute response of the animal eye to cyclocryocoagulation is mediated partly by prostaglandins and partly by a neural component resistent to an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis. When administered together, acetylsalicylic acid and ocular anesthesia yielded a further reduction in postoperative reactions and protein concentrations in the aqueous humour, but were unable to abolish the ocular response completely. The dual ocular mediation to cyclocryocoagulation is apparently due to the combined thermal and mechanical injury caused to ocular structures which synthesize prostaglandins and receive sensory innervation from the trigeminal nerve. The considerable breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier in cyclocryocoagulation allows leakage of different molecular weight proteins, in equal ratio, into the aqueous humour.

Notes: Summary Prostaglandin mediated transient increase in intraocular pressure following cryokoagulation of the ciliary body in rabbits was completely inhibited by preoperative administration of Aspisol (D, L-Lysin-mono-(acetylsalicylat)). To avoid additional increase in intraocular pressure in patients chosen for cyclocryotherapy, pretreatment with Aspisol could prove to be effective.

Notes: Abstract Histopathological changes following cyclocryokoagulation in a group of rabbits pretreated with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) were studied and compared with similar changes in a control group. As observed clinically, macroscopical and histological differences were only noted in the early phase after the procedure. In this phase, all operated eyes revealed an immense vascular response with edema, exudation and extravasation of blood cells. The treated animals, however, showed some reduction of tissue edema than the animals not treated. At a later stage there is an necrosis of the stroma with reduction of small vessels and tissue cells. The reparative process, tending to restore both epithelial and stromal lesions, begins already in the 3rd. week after cyclocryokoagulation. Neither the epithelial nor the stromal alterations differed significantly in any of the operated eyes at this stage. This indicates that ASA mainly affects an obviously prostaglandin-mediated acute vascular response. The disruption of the epithelial barrier may be aggravated by the subsequent stromal alterations, but does not seem to be influenced by ASA.

Notes: Abstract A case of a tapioca melanoma of the iris is studied by light and electron microscopy. Nodular elevations of the tumour were composed of spindle B- and epitheloid cells and of what appeared to be intermediate types. Tiny structures scattered over the entire tumour consisted of smaller epitheloid cells, many of which were found around superficial tumour vessels. Evidently, tapioca melanoma of the iris does not represent any specific histopathological entity. Tapioca melanoma of the iris is a low-grade malignant, locally aggressive tumour with a chronic clinical course.

Notes: Abstract Autologous hair material was used as a wick for drainage from the anterior chamber into the subconjunctival space in 8 rabbits. Though pressure reduction and methylene blue leakage was evident in the operated eyes, the histological observations seemed rather discouraging.

Notes: Abstract We employ a technique which has been used for in vitro studies of the vascular endothelium for obtaining flat preparations of different ocular structures such as corneal endothelium, epithelium of cornea, iris, ciliary body, lens and retinal pigment epithelium. The described method is relatively simple and allows evaluation of the overall state of these cellular sheets. After staining of the preparations with silver nitrate, we found intercellular lines to be present in all specimens studied except in the outer layers of the corneal epithelium. This method could be useful for in vitro studies of different pathological conditions of ocular tissues, both in animal models and in enucleated human eyes.
