    Notes: Cod were acclimated to 5 and 15° C (cold and warm acclimation, respectively) for at least 43 days after which tissue-somatic indices, tissue protein, DNA content, and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activity were measured. Liver, stomach, intestine, total heart and ventricle-somatic indices were all increased significantly in the cold acclimated animals compared with their warm acclimated counterparts. There were no differences in gill or white muscle-somatic indices between the acclimation temperatures. Tissue protein concentration (mg protein g tissue−1) was generally unaffected by temperature acclimation. Cold acclimation resulted in higher white muscle and lower ventricle CCO specific activities(μmol cytochrome c oxidized min−1· g tissue−1) compared with the respective warm acclimated tissues. No significant differences in CCO specific activity were observed in the remaining tissues (when measured at an intermediate temperature of 10° C). Total tissue CCO activity (measured at an intermediate temperature of 10° C) did not differ significantly between the cold and warm acclimated fish.

    Notes: The effect of reversing the natural seasonal change in photoperiod on the feeding and growth of juvenile cod, Gadus morhua. was investigated in two experiments. In an experiment conducted in spring no photoperiod effects on overall growth and food consumption were observed; however, tissue analysis at the end of the experiment showed that treatment groups differed significantly in their muscle water content. A repeat experiment conducted in early winter similarly failed to reveal an effect of photoperiod reversal on overall growth and feeding, although a very marked decline in growth rate was observed for all fish. The decline in growth rate observed in the second experiment cannot be accounted for by any changes in experimental procedure and is interpreted as possible evidence for an endogenous circa-annual rhythm in growth rate.

    Notes: Patterns within a fish assemblage have been examined from catches obtained over a period of 17 months using fixed nets and rod and line sampling. A total of 19 species were caught with summer samples dominated by dab and saithe and winter samples by whiting. Cod were caught regularly throughout the year. Catches at the study site of dab and whiting occurred mainly at night but for cod and saithe catches occurred throughout the day. There was no indication ofa crepuscular or tidal rhythm for any species. Differences between our own observations and those from other published studies lead us to conclude that no species-specific generalizations about feeding periodicities can be made. Feeding patterns are more likely to be determined by site-specific features of particular habitats and their associated prey and predator assemblages.Examination of stomach contents data using a variety of methods indicates that conclusions are highly dependent on the form of the resource matrix used. However, our analyses indicate that during summer cod and dab feed on a much narrower range of prey than saithe and that there is significant overlap in their diets if a resource matrix based on percentage occurrence of prey species is used. Nevertheless, most diet overlap values for the species examined were low (between 0.1 and 0.2) suggesting that competition for food is unlikely. To date, no experiments have been performed to test the hypothesis that cod and dab compete for food.

    Notes: Food intake was measured under conditions of continuous food availability for haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.), and dab, Limanda limanda (L.). Haddock consumed approximately 75% of all food during the day, with a peak of feeding at dusk and an inferred peak at dawn; peaks of feeding were associated with larger meals. By contrast, dabs were mainly night-time feeders with daily consumption rates that were approximately 40% lower than those shown by haddock. Comparison of haddock maximum daily ration with published estimates of consumption in the wild indicate that wild haddock feed at between 15 and 22% of their maximum capacity. Using published data on gastric evacuation, the relationship between meal size and stomach residuum was investigated. There was no detectable relationship between these two variables.

    Notes: The effects of seasonal acclimatization (i.e. simulated autumn and winter water temperature and photoperiod) on the specific growth rate, liver-somatic index, white muscle protein and RNA concentration of juvenile cod were investigated. Winter acclimatization resulted in cod having higher liver-somatic indices and white muscle RNA concentrations. The influence of environmental conditions on growth rate indices of cod are discussed in the light of these results.

    Notes: The attraction of small gadoids to physically disturbed seabed patches was examined experimentally using a modified remote operated vehicle. Video observations were made of simulated disturbances to investigate the influence of tidal state, time of day and current speed on the pattern of exploitation. Fish were more likely to be present in disturbed patches, and when present, occurred in significantly greater numbers than in control areas. However, this response was dependent on tidal state, occurring only on rising tides.

    Notes: Contrary to expectations there was no transition from a saltatory to a cruise search strategy in foraging behaviour of 7-to 33-day-old barramundi over the period of metamorphosis. Rather, there was a continual change in foraging behaviour, with increasing durations between swimming pauses and increasingly straight swimming paths, implying that hydrodynamic constraints on swimming may be a key determinant of foraging kinematics. It is suggested that the notion of saltatory search as a third, unique foraging strategy needs to be re-evaluated.

    Notes: Abstract A model to explain the behavioural mechanisms underlying the fountain manoeuvre, a predator-evasion response shown by fish shoals is tested. It is proposed that the responses of individual fish are constrained by requirements to (1) visually monitor the predator's behaviour, (2) minimise the energetic cost of escape, and (3) maximise the rate of passage around the predator. The model predicts that individuals will swim away from the threat at a constant angle determined by the rear limit of the visual field and that the range of reaction will be constrained by water visibility. The model's predictions were upheld in tests conducted in 1984 using a shoal of juvenile whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.). It is concluded that the principal determinant of the fountain manoeuvre is the visual field of the fish.
