Notizen: Two groups of infrared (IR) localized vibrational bands in the regions 975–1015 and 724–748 cm−1 have been correlated with the well-known IR electronic bands due to the thermal double donors (TDs) and with the TD concentration from resistivity measurements. The two groups are suggested to be due to two different vibrational modes of oxygen atoms in a TD core. The vibrational bands at 975, 988, 999, and 1006 cm−1 are correlated to TD1, TD2, TD3, and TDs≥TD4, respectively, while the band at 1012 cm−1 correlates to the NL10 center. A calibration coefficient for the TD-related vibrational bands was determined. This calibration coefficient can be used to estimate the sizes of the TD-related centers, assuming that the calibration coefficient for interstitial oxygen is applicable on the oxygen atoms of these centers. This results in that all of the TD-related bands originates from centers of 1–2 oxygen atoms, suggesting these bands to be due to the vibrations of oxygen atoms in a TD core. The different positions of the TD-related bands could be explained by differently strained environments caused by different oxygen clusters. It is suggested that these clusters will develop into larger oxygen precipitates, which at the end of TD formation appear in the spectrum with a broad IR band at about 1060 cm−1. The early stages of the TD formation at temperatures below about 450 °C are closely related to a transformation process of preexisting clusters related to the 1012 cm−1 band. This explains the formation of the early TDs at low temperatures, when the interstitial oxygen concentration is nearly constant. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Thermal donor formation in silicon at 390, 420, and 450 °C has been investigated and correlated with IR vibrational absorption bands observable at room temperature. It is suggested that oxygen is clustering in different structures giving rise to absorption bands at 975, 988, 1000, 1006, and 1012 cm−1. The bands at 975, 988, and 1000 cm−1 are related to the three first appearing double donors as studied by low-temperature infrared spectroscopy. The 1012 cm−1 band is related to the most frequently appearing type of structure and is suggested to correspond to a different type of donor, possibly the shallow thermal donors or the new thermal donors. The development of the new bands with heat treatment time shows a complex behavior. The early stages of thermal donor formation as studied at 390 °C are not governed by ordinary long-range oxygen diffusion but by a transformation process of pre-existing clusters corresponding to the 1012 cm−1 band. At 450 °C the cluster transformation process appears in parallel with an aggregation of oxygen atoms diffusing to the clusters. Another group of vibrational bands appears in the range 724–745 cm−1. These bands develop simultaneously with the 975–1012 bands and are suggested to be related to a different vibrational mode of the oxygen atoms in the clusters. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In addition to the well-known spectrum of Czochralski-grown silicon, two infrared bands at 560 and 648 cm−1 are found to arise from the interstitial oxygen in silicon. The assignment of the bands is performed using the studies of their oxygen isotope shift and temperature dependence. The 560 cm−1 band is attributed to the hot counterpart of the mode at 518 cm−1 and the 648 cm−1 band to the combination of the far-infrared mode at 29 cm−1 with the Raman active mode at around 600 cm−1. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The bistability of the two first thermal donors (TDs) in silicon has been studied by means of infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The two IR vibrational bands positioned at about 975 and 988 cm−1 which are due to TD1 and TD2, respectively, have been found to show bistable properties. It is shown that the low energy configurations of both TD1 and TD2 give rise to IR absorption, with a common vibrational band at about 1020 cm−1. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Human IgG is shown to inhibit the cytotoxic activity in vitro of human lymphocytes for chicken erythrocytes sensitized with rabbit antibodies. The inhibitory activity depends on the degree of aggregation of IgG, small complexes of 9 to 10 S being more inhibitory than monomeric molecules or heavy-weight aggregates. For the immunoglobulin to be inhibitory, an intact Fc fragment is required. It is suggested that the inhibition is due to the binding of aggregated human IgG to lymphocytes needed in the cytotoxic reaction

Notizen: Sera containing rheumatoid factors inhibited the in vitro cytotoxicity of human peripheral lymphocytes for sensitized chicken erythrocytes. In contrast, sera from healthy blood donors did not inhibit the reaction. The inhibitory activity of rheumatoid factor sera was enhanced in the presence of heataggregated human gamma globulin (HGG). Aggregated HGG per se or added to blood donor sera was only slightly inhibitory in this system. Lymphocyte cytotoxicity induced by phytohaemagglutinin was not inhibited by any of these sera, not even in the presence of aggregated HGG. It is concluded that a majority of sera containing rheumatoid factors also contain factors inhibitory to the in vitro cytotoxicity of human lymphocytes for sensitized target cells. The strong inhibitory activity of mixtures of rheumatoid factor sera and aggregated HGG in the sensitized target cell system may be due to complex formation between anti-immunoglobulin factors and gamma globulin. Such complexes might inhibit the reaction by binding to the surface of lymphocytes cytotoxic for target cells carrying antigen-antibody complexes.

Notizen: Immune-complex-binding cells have been excluded from suspensions of purified human lymphocytes by a rosette-formation procedure with antibody-sensitized ox erythrocytes. After such treatment the remaining lymphocytes were tested in a cytotoxicity assay, using 51Cr-labeled chicken erythrocytes as the target cells. Lymphocyte cytotoxicity for antibody-coated target cells was profoundly reduced after removal of immune-complex-binding cells (more than 10 times reduction within 4 to 6 hours of incubation). Lymphocyte cytotoxicity induced by phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was also reduced by the same procedure. This reduction was less marked, the cytotoxicity of lymphocytes lacking immune-complex-binding cells being 26% to 82% (mean, 47%) of control lymphocytes. The results indicate that a population of immune-complex-binding lymphocytes is needed for lymphocyte cytotoxicity induced by target cell antibodies and also for the full expression of PHA-induced cytotoxicity.

Notizen: Two patients with cutaneous alternaria infection are presented. In both patients the skin lesions were characterized by multiple non-healing ulcers covered with dry crusts. Although the skin changes were macroscopically alike in the two patients, differences in the histology were seen. Both patients had primary debilitating diseases. A review of the literature is presented and revealed an additional ten cases of cutaneous alternariosis. Methods for the isolation of Alternaria and the susceptibility of the fungus to antimycotic drugs are presented.
