    Notes: Abstract  Recent sediment accumulation rates are 18–230 mg cm-2 yr-1 (0.02–0.2 cm yr-1) based on excess 210Pb activity profiles in the southwestern part of the East Sea (Sea of Japan). Assuming no mixing beneath surface mixed layers, 210Pb-derived sediment accumulation rates are 18–32 mg cm-2 yr-1 in the northern part of the Yamato Ridge and the Ulleung Basin, 29–136 mg cm-2 yr-1 in the Korea Plateau, and 230 mg cm-2 yr-1 in the southern shelf. These values generally agree with long-term sedimentation rates estimated from dated ash layers.

    Notes: Abstract Clay minerals of the surface sediments of Bransfield Strait, Antarctica, exhibit distinctive geographical distributions: kaolinite has the highest concentration near the shore of the South Shetland Islands in the northern strait (20%); chlorite, near Smith Island in the northwestern strait; illite, on the continental shelf off the Antarctic Peninsula in the southern strait (80%); and smectite, close to the Penguin and Bridgeman islands in the northeastern strait (25%). This distribution pattern, combined with hydrographic and climatic data for the strait, are used to infer clay mineral provenance and dispersal patterns.

    Notes: Using the technique of Cs+ reactive ion scattering (Cs+ RIS), we show that reaction of CO and O on a Pt(111) surface produces a CO2 precursor species that remains stable on the surface up to 300 K. The CO2 species desorbs with an activation energy of 46±3 kJ mol−1, whereas the direct CO2 gas formation via Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH) reaction between CO and O occurs with an activation energy of 75±4 kJ mol−1. The observation reveals a new pathway for CO oxidation reaction, which is different from the direct LH pathway. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In a retrospective study, the prognostic value of monitoring the decay of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was assessed. Serum AFP was determined serially in 18 children with malignant germ-cell or hepatic tumors: 7 endodermal sinus tumor, 3 embryonal carcinoma, 5 malignant teratoma, 2 hepatoblastomas, and 1 hepatocellular carcinoma. The actual half-life (AHL) of AFP was computed after surgical resection of the tumor. In group 1, which had complete resection and no recurrence during follow-up (n = 13), the AHL of AFP was 4.0 ± 0.9 days. In group 2, which had incomplete resection or recurrence during follow-up (n = 5), the AHL of AFP was 24.8 ± 20 days, significantly longer than that of group 1 (P = 0.0026). The increased AHL of AFP indicated residual active tumor after surgical resection. The AHL of AFP may be more sensitive than serial monitoring of AFP in detecting preclinical recurrence after surgical resection of AFP-secreting tumors. Treatment strategies can be based on AFP clearance, and prospective clinical trials are warranted.

The weight additive rule of the intrinsic viscosity of polyblend relating to the values of each polymeric constituent was attested to with PEG/CS polyblend. The calculation formula of Huggins coefficient for polyblend, km, was theoretically deduced, and a very simple expression of α was obtained. First, the values of α for PEG/CS blends with different PEG molecular weight were estimated from the experimental viscosity data of the polyblends with different mixed ratio. According to these values of α, it can be predicted that an attractive interaction exists between the molecule of PEG and that of CS. Second, the viscosity of CS was measured in pseudo-solvents (PEG dissolved in 0.01N sodium chloride aqueous solution) with different PEG concentrations. From these viscosity data, the values of cross Huggins coefficient are calculated to be all larger than the values of the Huggins coefficient both for CS and for PEG. On the revised α criterion, the dissimilar molecular interaction in PEG/CS polyblend is demonstrated to be attractive too. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1275-1281, 1998
