Notes: The propargyl radical (CH2C≡CH) produced by the ArF excimer laser photolysis of allene was observed by time-resolved infrared diode laser spectroscopy. More than one hundred and fifty absorption lines have been assigned to the ν6 (CH2-wagging) fundamental band of propargyl. Most of the absorption lines were observed as doublets due to the spin–rotation interaction in the 2B1 ground electronic state. The rotational and spin–rotation interaction constants derived for the ground vibrational state are, A0=9.608 47(36), B0=0.317 674(24), C0=0.307 098(24), εaa=−0.017 58(95), and εbb=−0.000 355(76) cm−1, where the figures in parentheses are 2.5 times standard deviations to be attached to the last digit. The ν6 band origin is 687.176 03(62) cm−1, consistent with the infrared spectrum observed in the argon matrix. Anomalously large vibrational changes in the A rotational constant and the ΔK centrifugal distortion constant are accounted for by the a-type Coriolis interaction between the ν6 and ν10 states, where ν10 is the CH2-rocking vibration. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A couple of zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals with single boundaries (ZnO-ZnO single-contacts) are fabricated by the traditional vapor reaction method and their electrical properties are characterized. The ZnO-ZnO single-contacts obtained show nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics without varistor-forming constituents. Some of the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts show pronounced nonlinear I-V characteristics with negative resistance. The I-V characteristics of the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts are apparently similar to those of ZnO varistors; however, there are marked differences in the electric structure of the boundaries between the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts and ZnO varistors. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) relations of the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts are quite different from that of ZnO varistors and no evidence for the formation of double Schottky barriers at the boundary region are found. A very slow response to current stress is a feature of ZnO-ZnO single-contacts and it is suggested that any thermal processes including Joule heat would modify the carrier transport efficiency through the boundaries.

Notes: A truing technique that can be used to shape the tip of an electroformed diamond tool intoa hemisphere and flatten diamond grains on the tool working surface at the same level as the bondface was developed. A polycrystalline diamond disk whose top surface roughened by electricaldischarge machining was partially flattened by grinding was used as a truer. Diamond grains on thetool working surface were successfully flattened along the hemispherical tool profile when the grainsmesh size of #1000 was employed. In addition, a grinding test using glasslike carbon as a workmaterial revealed that a surface roughness of less than 50 nm Rz could be obtained in both cases whenmoving the tool on contour and scanning paths

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the role of muscarinic cholinergic and α2-adrenergic mechanisms in growth hormone (GH) secretion during exercise in humans. The GH responses induced during moderate-intensity exercise (using a cycle ergometer at 60% maximal oxygen uptake, V˙O2max, for 30 min) without treatment (control) and after the administration of a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist (atropine 1 mg) or after an α2-adrenergic antagonist (yohimbine 15 mg) were compared in seven healthy men. Although, serum GH concentration had increased significantly after exercise in the control experiment [mean peak GH concentration 52.64 (SEM 18.60) ng · ml−1], the increase was suppressed by the administration of either atropine [mean peak GH concentration 8.64 (SEM 7.47)  ng · ml−1] or yohimbine [mean peak GH concentration 17.50 (SEM 7.89) ng · ml−1]. The area under the curve of serum GH concentration against time was significantly lower in the experiment using these drugs [with atropine, mean area 458 (SEM 409) ng · ml−1 · min], with yohimbine mean area 946 (SEM 435) ng · ml−1 · min] than in the control experiment [mean area 3135 (SEM 1098) ng · ml−1 · min]. These results suggest that muscarinic cholinergic and α2-adrenergic mechanisms are involved in GH secretion during exercise in humans.

Notes: Abstract The present study was carried out to elucidate whether an exercise-induced increase in plasma hydrogen ion concentration influences aldosterone secretion. Six healthy men (aged 22–25 years) performed two intermittent exercise tests with and without drug administration. The intensities of these exercise tests were 40% maximal oxygen uptake (V˙O2max) and 90% V˙O2max, respectively. Administration of 2-mg Dexamethasone and 50-mg Captopril caused an almost complete suppression of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and an enhancement of the elevation in renin concentration during exercise, indicating successful inhibition of ACTH release and angiotensin II production during exercise. While the magnitude of the increase in aldosterone in the drug experiment was depressed compared with the control experiment, a significant increase in aldosterone concentration was observed at the end of the 90% V˙O2max exercise. Whilst the change in aldosterone concentration did not correlate with the change in plasma potassium concentration, there was a significant correlation between aldosterone and plasma hydrogen ion concentrations in the drug experiment. Since the correlation coefficient was low (r=0.455), the biological meaning of this correlation should be further investigated. These results would suggest that an elevation of plasma hydrogen ion concentration induced by exercise per se appears to be related, at least in part, with increased aldosterone secretion, independent of the pituitary-adrenal axis, and the renin-angiotensin system.

Notes: Abstract Chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma are the accepted sequelae of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, the real natural history of HCV infection is not still well understood. To approach this problem, we investigated 91 individuals positive for antibodies against HCV (anti-HCV), who have received annual liver function examination in a local town known to have had high carrier rates of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV. Among the 91 anti-HCV-positive individuals, 63 had undertaken the annual examination more than five times in the past 14 years. We analyzed retrospectively the past liver function test results of these 63 subjects and evaluated their present virological status by determining HCV genotypes and estimating quantity of HCV RNA in the sera. Among the 63 subjects, 50 (79.4%) had HCV RNA in the serum and 40 (80%) of the 50 subjects with HCV RNA had abnormal alanine aminotransferase or aspartate aminotransferase level more than once in their records. However, the other 10 (20%) had no abnormal levels during the period examined. Six of 50 (12%) had ultrasonographic findings suggestive of cirrhosis. Thus, HCV-infected individuals in this area did not seem to have progressive liver diseases. Considering the advanced ages of the individuals examined (mean 64 years old), we may have observed a stage in the natural history of HCV infection in which viremia persists in most individuals and the tendency to progress to serious chronic liver disease is mild.
