    Notes: There are many ecological diversity measures, but their suitability for use with highly diverse bacterial communities is unclear and seldom considered. We assessed a range of species richness and evenness/dominance indices, and the use of species abundance models using samples of bacteria from zinc-contaminated and control soils. Bacteria were assigned to operational taxonomic units (OTUs) using amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis of 236 clones from each soil. The reduced diversity apparent in the contaminated soil was reflected by the diversity indices to varying degrees. The number of clones analysed and the weighting given to rare vs. abundant OTUs are the most important considerations when selecting measures. Our preferences, arrived at using theory and practical experience, include: the log series index alpha; the Q statistic (but only if coverage is 50% or more); the Berger–Parker and Simpson's indices, although their ecological relevance may be limited; and, unexpectedly, the Shannon–Wiener and Shannon evenness indices, even though their meanings may not be clear and their values inaccurate when coverage is low. For extrapolation, the equation for the log series distribution seems the best for extrapolating from OTU accumulation curves while non-parametric methods, such as Chao 1, show promise for estimating total OTU richness. Due to a preponderance of single-occurrence OTUs, none of the five species abundance models fit the OTU abundance distribution of the control soil, but both the log and log normal models fit the less diverse contaminated soil. Species abundance models are useful, irrespective of coverage, because they address the whole distribution of a sample, aiding comparison by revealing overall trends as well as specific changes in particular abundance classes.

    Notes: Around half a million tonnes of biosolids (sewage sludge dry solids) are applied to agricultural land in the United Kingdom each year, and this may increase to 732 000 t by 2005/6. The heavy metals contained in biosolids may permanently degrade the microbial decomposer communities of agricultural soils. We used amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis of the extractable bacterial fraction to compare the diversity of a zinc-contaminated soil (400 mg kg−1 Zn; pH 5.7 and 1.36% Corg) with that of a control soil (57 mg kg−1 Zn; pH 6.2 and 1.40% Corg) from a long-term sewage sludge experiment established in 1982 at ADAS Gleadthorpe. Comparison of the restriction fragment length polymorphisms of 236 clones from each soil suggested that the stress caused by zinc toxicity had lowered bacterial diversity. There were 120 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the control soil, but only 90 in the treated soil, a decrease of 25%. While the control soil had 82 single-occurrence OTUs the contaminated soil had only 52. The fall in diversity was accompanied by a decrease in evenness. The most abundant OTUs in the contaminated soil (which tended to be common to both soils) accounted for a higher proportion of clones than in the control. The most dominant OTU, in both soils, belonged to the Rubrobacter radiotolerans group of the high G+C Gram-positive bacteria. The data was also used to develop efficient sampling strategies.

    Notes: The crystal structure of the dipolar chromophoric title compound, C20H20N3+·PF6−, is described. The phenylene and pyridyl rings are almost coplanar [dihedral angle 7.5 (2)°], but the phenyl substituent forms a dihedral angle of 56.6 (1)° with the pyridyl ring. The compound crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group Cc and is a likely candidate for the display of quadratic non-linear optical effects.

    Notes: Abstract The gastrointestinal tract is the most common extranodal site of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We present a case of a 50-year-old male with primary B cell lymphoma arising in an S-pouch eight years after a total proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis. After chemoradiotherapy the patient remained asymptomatic, with an intact S-pouch. Pouch conservation is feasible in patients with primary lymphoma of the pouch, using chemoradiotherapy and close follow-up examinations.

    Notes: Abstract The hemodynamic effects of combined venoarterial injury and stasis were studied in the hindlimbs of 10 dogs. Femoral arterial blood flow and pressure, peripheral venous pressure, and peripheral resistance were measured after the restoration of blood flow following venoarterial injury and a 4-hour period of occlusion for up to 72 hours. In one limb of each animal both the artery and vein were repaired, whereas only the artery was repaired in the other limb and the vein was ligated. Arterial blood flow was similar in both groups but was significantly diminished from baseline for the first 30 minutes after restoration of blood flow, but then it became significantly reduced in the limbs with venous ligation when compared with values in those with venous repair. By 72 hours the flow on both sides returned to control values. Peripheral venous hypertension and edema occurred in all 10 limbs with venous ligation and persisted for the 72-hour experimental period. In the 10 limbs with venous repair, edema occurred in four and venous hypertension in none. The peripheral resistance was elevated on both sides; this elevation persisted for 75 minutes and then dropped to control values. None of the repaired arteries and only one repaired vein thrombosed during the experiment. Combined venous and arterial occlusion for 4 hours reduced both the amount of arterial flow and its subsequent rate of increase compared with changes seen after release of an actue venous occlusion. The rate of increase was enhanced by repair of the affected venous segment compared with simple venous ligation.

    Notes: Ferric chloride-photosensitized free-radical initiation was used to generate propagating radicals in polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA), acrylamide (A), and diacetone acrylamide (DAA) in rigid glasses of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, or acetone at near liquid nitrogen temperatures. When the temperatures of the glasses were increased, primary radicals derived from the solvents reacted with the monomers to yield propagating radicals. Formation and conformational changes of the propagating radicals at different temperatures were studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. It was concluded that one type of propagating radical was formed in all cases. However, when the temperature of the rigid glass was increased, the structural conformation of the radical that initially allowed the near-equivalent interaction of the α-hydrogen and one of the β-hydrogens with the unpaired electron generated a three-line spectrum.
