Notes: Summary During the last phase of mammalian morphogenesis, between days 14 and 16 of gestation in the mouse, the fetal eyelids grow across the eye and become tightly fused with each other. This paper describes the surface pattern of fetal eyelids, revealed by the scanning electron microscope, during normal eyelid growth and fusion in the ICR/M1 stock of mice. Fusion proceeds from both inner and outer canthi and progresses toward the middle of the gap. The first changes in cell shape and distribution occur at the inner canthus. On day 14, a large clump of rounded cells appears on the inner surface of the inner canthus. A day later, two clumps of rounded cells are positioned to either side of, i.e. above and below, the inner canthus. As fusion progresses, the diminishing gap fills with a profusion of rounded cells that are extruded, flattened, and sloughed off from the area of completed fusion. The profusion of rounded surface cells during eyelid growth and fusion appears to be a major characteristic in which the eyelid fusion process differs both from permanent fusions, such as the fusion of the neural tube, lip or palate, and from other temporary fusions, such as fusion of the digits to each other or of the pinnae to the scalp.

Notes: Reproductive cycling and oocyte development were examined for female tilefish, Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps Goode and Bean, captured in the South Atlantic Bight, U.S.A. A total of 752 female tilefish was collected during 15 sampling periods from May 1982 to December 1983. Reproductive cycling was quantified using four techniques: gross visual estimation of ovarian stages, histological examination of ovaries, follicle diameter measurements, and an ovarian index. The relative accuracies of these techniques also were evaluated. All four methods indicated that L. chamaeleonticeps was capable of spawning from March to June. Most spawning occurred between April and June. Ovarian development was positively correlated with the change in daylength. Follicular development was asynchronous, which is characteristic of multiple spawners. Folliculogenesis was similar to that in most oviparous teleosts.

Notes: Abstract Global input parameters for a Hauser-Feshbach calculation of astrophysical nuclear reaction rates are evaluated; wherever possible they are expressed as systematic functions of nucleon numbersN andZ rather than mass numberA. Average (n, γ) cross-sections at 30 keV are calculated for all stable nuclei and nuclei with lifetimes ≥ 1 yr, taking into account the effects of width fluctuations. Agreement with experimental results is generally obtained to within 70%, but systematic discrepancies arise for even-even target nuclei between neutron shell closuresN=50 andN=82. A σN curve for thes-process nuclei is in good agreement with theoretical predictions, except for a possible anomalous peak aroundA=180.

Notes: Abstract Data accumulated by the Solar Maximum Mission Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) have been searched for evidence of the 2.223 MeV neutron capture line from the Sun, outside the times of γ-ray-emitting solar flares. Background-corrected spectra accumulated over 3-day intervals between 1980 and 1989 show no evidence of the line. Upper limits are reported separately for periods of high and low solar activity. A conservative 3σ upper limit of 5.7 × 10−5 γ (cm2 s)−1 is placed on the steady flux in the 2.223 MeV line during inactive periods, which is nearly two orders of magnitude lower than previously published results. After correction for limb darkening of the line emission from off-center positions, this upper limit becomes 7.1 × 10−5 γ (cm2s)−1. Our 3σ upper limit on the steady flux in the line during periods of high solar activity is 6.9 × 10−5 γ (cm2 s)−1, or 8.6 × 10−5 γ (cm2 s)−1 after correction for limb darkening. Our results imply that the quiescent solar corona cannot be heated by ions accelerated above 1 MeV in microflares (or a continuous acceleration process), so long as the ion energy spectrum is similar to that measured in large flares. We also use our results to derive the rate of tritium production at the solar surface; our upper limit of 9 nuclei (cm2 s)−1 is about a factor of 9 below the upper limit from searches for 3H in the solar wind. We place upper limits of the order 1033 on the number of energetic (〉 30 MeV) protons which can be stored in active regions prior to being released in solar flares, which imply that the strongest observed flares cannot be produced by such a mechanism.

Notes: Abstract A survey of blood specimens from 146 American bison, Bison bison, showed the presence of two hemoglobin phenotypes because the ratio of the two normally occurring hemoglobins differed. These two hemoglobins, which are readily identified by their electrophoretic properties and are referred to as Hb-fast and Hb-slow, have been found in all bison. Chromatographic analyses showed that in the majority of animals the ratio between the relative amounts of Hb-fast and Hb-slow was about 60:40, but in three animals from South Dakota this ratio was about 80:20. Structural studies were made on the α chains of Hb-fast and Hb-slow from one animal with the 60:40 ratio and on those from a second animal with the 80:20 ratio. Four types of α chains could be demonstrated which differ from each other by at least one to three amino acid residues. It is suggested that these four α-chain types are the products of two nonallelic Hb α structural genes and their alleles.
