Notes: Summary The age of onset of equine recurrent laryngeal neuropathy has not been ascertained, although the clinical condition of left laryngeal hemiplegia (“roaring”) has been recognized for centuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the laryngeal muscles of draft horse foals for the presence of fiber-type grouping, indicating denervation and reinnervation, and to determine if histological evidence of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy was present. Abductor and adductor laryngeal muscles from the left and right sides were collected immediately after euthanasia from male draft horse foals, six less than 2 weeks and four 6 months of age, and stained for myosin ATPase. A morphometric test was used to objectively evaluate several areas from each muscle for fiber-type grouping. Extensive fiber-type grouping which was characteristic of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy was found in one of the young foals and all of the older foals. Four of the young foals had some areas of fiber-type grouping suggestive of mild, early changes associated with recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. One of the young foals had no fiber-type grouping present in any of the laryngeal muscles evaluated. These findings suggest an early age of onset of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy.

Notes: Abstract A composite solution containing Na, K, Ca, Mg and Sr was made up such that no change in the concentration of the separate constituents took place on passing the solution through a column of powdered fat-free bone taken from the long bones of three month old rats. The radioactive tracers45Ca, and85Sr, or133Ba, or223Ra were then added to the influent solution and the comparative rates of uptake of the separate radioactive nuclides was measured with respect to the volume of solution passed through the column. Similarly the elution rates of the separate activities from the bone were measured by omitting the tracer additions to the influent solution. The resulting curves for uptake and elution when 1 1/2 to 2 litres of solution were passed through the column were fitted to a two term exponential so that two space constants and two rate processes have been identified. The first rate process was completely reversible for both45Ca and85Sr when elution follows immediately after the uptake but was almost absent in the case of133Ba and223Ra. The size of the second space constant was dependent on the time delay in carrying out the elutions of activity from the bone.

Notes: Abstract The retention of45Ca has been determined up to 388 days after an intravenous injection by measuring the urinary and faecal excretions and correcting for the loss from the skin. In the two healthy men examined, the urinary excretion rates were very similar but the faecal excretion rates differed by a factor of two. Retention expressed as dose minus excretion followed a power law after the first 4 or 7 weeks but at earlier times an additional exponential term was necessary to account for the data. Plasma concentrations of the dose were measured up to 15 days after the injection. The renal clearances for the two subjects were not significantly different.

Notes: [Auszug] It is, therefore, to be expected that if inbred bone, grown in a hybrid, is soleJy inbred in nature, it may be successfully retransplanted back into that inbred. If, however, hybrid bone has been formed in the transplant it will elicit a homograft reaction when returned to a host of the same ...
