    Notes: Abstract Gassy sediments are detectable acoustically in subbottom profiles of Canada's Fraser Delta slope and prodelta areas. Interstitial gas is typically represented by zones of acoustic turbidity on high-resolution seismic profiles and by gas brightening on air-gun profiles. The top of the acoustically turbid zone is generally highest within the sediment column closest to the river mouths and lies within 10 ms (two-way travel time) of the sea floor in a nearly continuous area that covers over 530 km2. Most of the gas is believed to be biogenic in origin, although thermogenic gas derived from underlying Tertiary sedimentary rocks may be present in places.

    Notes: The Outardes Estuary (Quebec) is a regressive sandy system developed in a sub-boreal climatic setting. The Outardes River drains an area of 18 780 km2 and was dammed for hydroelectric purposes in the 1960s and‘70s. By reconstructing the hydrographs and mapping the morphology of the estuary from aerial photographs over a period of 21 years, we have documented the changes in the estuary resulting from the modification of the hydrologic regime.Until the mid-1960s, a catastrophic spring freshet (1800–2800 m33s-1) controlled the morphology of the estuary. The mouth was dominated by a disorganized, braided channel pattern, and large fluvial discharge-generated transverse bars. Peripheral channel areas in the upper estuary were zones of transport at flood stages. For 18 months in 1968 and‘69 the river discharge was drastically reduced (50 m3s-1) to accomplish the main reservoir filling. Tidal currents and waves filled and remodelled the morphology of the mouth of the estuary, while the peripheral zones in the upper estuary experienced low-energy sedimentation. Since the generating plants were brought on-line in 1969, the fluvial discharge has been unable to modify substantially the sand body geometry in the mouth of the estuary. In the upper estuary the peripheral regions continue to be filled in, but the thalweg is being eroded.Based on the results of our coring programme, we suggest that major environmental changes may leave a sedimentary signature (addition or subtraction of size modes) which can be identified by the detailed analysis of grain size distributions.

    Notes: The morphology and dynamics of modern gravel shorefaces are poorly documented. This hinders the interpretation of possible ancient counterparts. A comparative study of a modern (Chesil Beach, England) and an ancient (Baytree Member of the Cardium Formation, Alberta) gravel shoreface shows that the two systems are very similar close to and above sea-level, with a high (about 1 m) gravel plunge step lying below plane-bedded sands and gravels of the beachface. The shoreface at Chesil Beach is dominated by asymmetrical gravel wave ripples. These are oriented offshore near the toe of the shoreface, and onshore in shallower depths. This may reflect offshore movement during storms and landward reworking during fair weather. The Baytree Member is over 12 m thick and comprises over 80% conglomerate. Conglomerate is decimetre-bedded, massive or cross-bedded, with sets over 60 cm thick produced by gravel bedforms migrating alongshore. It is interbedded with discontinuous cm- to dm-bedded sandstones which may be cross-bedded. Pebble fabric and cross-bed orientation both indicate strong alongshore sediment transport. Near the base of the section, pebble orientations suggest that gravel wave-ripples developed below the zone of strong longshore flows. Differences between these two examples may be attributed to different directions of wave approach.

    Notes: Abstract The Foreslope Hills are a series of ridges and troughs covering over 60 km2 of the sea floor at the base of the Fraser Delta slope. Internally, the hills consist of blocks of prodelta and delta slope sediment (〉 10.6 km3) bounded by offshore dipping faults and shear planes. Stratification within each block generally dips landward, indicating rotational failure. The amount of downslope translation of delta slope sediments was relatively minor. Deformation is restricted to a deep structural trough, suggesting failure resulted from yielding of soft underlying (early Holocene) prodelta sediments in the trough.
